Guide to Naming a Boy

Boy Names

I firmly believe there’s never been a better time to name a son. We have more freedom than ever when it comes to choosing our children’s names, and parents are exercising it for all children, boys and girls alike.

At the same time, it’s tough to know how far to go. Is Rowan truly unisex, or will your son dislike sharing his name with girls? Should you use a name like Wilder or Hayes if it’s not on your family tree? Is any kid really cool enough to answer to Cannon or King? And what if you just plain prefer traditional boy names? Can a Thomas or a William still love his name in a generation of kids called Maverick and River?

The answers will depend on your family. That’s tough to hear, right? I mean … you were probably looking for a more definitive answer. Sorry ’bout that.

But I can offer some good advice for figuring out what works for your particular circumstances, and tons of lists once you’ve narrowed down your style.

TRADITIONAL BOY NAMES

If you’re looking for the most classic of the classics, start with this list.

Classic Boy Names: Henry, Patrick, and John

SWEET SPOT BOY NAMES

Trying to balance the current and the traditional-ish? Sweet spot boy names might be for you.

24 Sweet Spot Boy Names: Jonah, Malcolm, Lane

LONG AND SHORT

Thinking you’d like to keep it simple? Or do you know that you like your boy names long and elaborate? Either way, there’s a list for you.

I love your website and love talking about names! I think you should write a post about animal names that work and those that don’t. I’m hoping to name my little bundle of Christmas joy, if said bundle should turn out to be a boy bundle, Badger Marion. When I’ve said this name to family and friends I’ve had about a 50/50 split. Half love it and think it is cowboy cool (all the little boys thought it was the awesomest name of any of the cousins ever), and the other half thought it was ridiculous.

With Fox and Bear so popular, and the prevalence of Cougar in my family (named after a great-grandfather Cougar Jack–real name John Moroni), and my younger brother wanting to name his first boy Puma, I think this is a timely issue.

Could you do Eadric as a NOTD?
I love all of the the amazing info you pull up on these names! This website is a treasure.

Several of your links above go to only a line or two of the article, obviously leaving it incomplete. Examples: Leander, Zebedee, Clive…. I’m accessing from an iPad so perhaps that adds to the problem (?), although most of them work just fine.

Tia, it’s not you – it’s me! I migrated the site in April, and to borrow a Harry Potter verb, many of the posts were splinched! If you leave a comment on the name you’d like to read or send me an email, or just leave a comment with all of them, I’ll fix those next … otherwise I’m trudging through, one week at a time. Right now I have to pull them all up to see which ones didn’t make it through, so that’s what takes time. Importing them correctly is a snap!

We need a three syllable boys name that does not begin with “B” and preferably not ending with “N” due to our last name. We already have biological sons named Gabriel Peter, Raphael David, and Elias Michael, and an adopted son named Rony Anibal Juan.We kept his name from birth because my husband’s name is Ronald and to honor his heritage. We are adopting an African American boy, and we are white and Catholic. His middle name will be Andrew because he was born on his feast day. We love Tobias but feel we must reject it due to the Toby connection from Roots. We are seriously con sidering Theodore with the nickname of Theo. Our biological daughters names are Olivia Jane, Delia Katherine, and Larissa Rose, Our adopted daughter is Izabela Violetta Maria. We kept her birth mother’s choice of first name and picked the middle names. Our new son’s birth sisters who we are also adopting we are pretty set in naming Gianna Therese, Helena Grace, Violet Anna, and Adeline Ruth. But does Theodore go with our other names? And what about all the girls names. It gets hard with so many kids in a family. We want somewhat unique first names and common middle names. Thank you.

I think Zachary would be a good name to do, as it has not dropped below 70th since 1981. This fact doesn’t include Zachery, Zackary, Zackery, Zacary, Zack, Zach, Zac, or Zak.

Hi! I came across your site as I was searching for Kitsune as a middle name for my baby girl. I was pleased to see that someone other than me likes this name. We’re thinking Luna Kitsune.

I’d like to leave a few suggestions for your names of the day, as I’ve tossed around quite a few recently.

For girls
Olilli (oh lee lee) is a Hawaiian word meaning “shimmering like the moonlight”
Maeren “people of the sea”

For boys
Waylon
Odin

unisex
Grail “sacred vessel”

Ah, I think I wrote the Gail post before I read The Hunger Games trilogy – Gale is a very attractive male character. What to do?

Hi there! This is my first time commenting, though I’ve been lurking around for a little while. Great site; thanks for all of your hard work in putting it together! I love all of the site’s features; the name of the day, the baby name stories, the articles, the Sunday Summaries, e.t.c. I love the insight you provide on names, Abby! Anyways, just wanted to say thank you for creating this site and for all of your hard work. I find it truly fascinating.

I think it is really neat that you put together a master list of all the boys’ names that have been featured as name of the day! Since I’m fairly new to this site I haven’t read that many name of the day posts. But because you’ve done this I can click on the boys’ names that interest me most and read all about them! And I can draw a lot of inspiration from this list, as I am sure the other readers can, too! THANK YOU for putting this together. That must have taken quite a bit of time. Upon looking through the name of the day posts, I’ve found that Eli & Thorsten are missing from the Boys’ Master list.

Thank you once again!
