The baby name Kelso fits with plenty of current trends, but remains on the edges.
Thanks to Ella for suggesting our Baby Name of the Day.
WHAT DOES THE NAME KELSO MEAN?
Kelso started out as a surname derived from a place name.
The Scottish town of Kelso is located on the River Tweed. It took its name from the establishment of the Kelso Abbey in the 12th century. During the medieval period, the abbey was both large and wealthy.
There’s more than one possible origin for Kelso. The Welsh Calchfynydd might be another source, likely related to calch – limestone. It could also come from the Old English word cealc, meaning chalk, making Kelso a “chalk ridge” or similar.
If that mix of languages and origins sounds diverse, it’s probably because Kelso sits in the Scottish Borders, sometimes called the Marches. It’s above northern England.
KELSO AS A SURNAME
The landscape often inspired surnames, so it is not a surprise to find Kelso in use, along with variations like Kelsoe.
But it wasn’t broadly familiar until the small screen gave the name to two enduring characters.
KELSO ON THE SMALL SCREEN
In 1998, the world went back in time, thanks to That 70s Show.
Ashton Kutcher, then a relative unknown, played one of the teenagers: Michael Kelso. He was forever in love with Jackie, and usually depicted as none-too-bright – though his character develops across the show’s long run. The series also introduced his brother, Casey, played by Luke Wilson.
In the follow-up series, That 90s Show, we meet Jay Kelso, the son of Michael and Jackie.
There’s also Bob Kelso, a senior doctor on long-running medical comedy Scrubs. Dr. Kelso is chief of medicine for the show’s first seven seasons, beginning in 2001. He hasn’t returned for the recent re-boot, but it’s another familiar use of the surname.
It’s not actually the first pop culture Kelso, though. That honor probably goes to Disney movie That Darn Cat! It starred Hayley Mills. The cat – DC – is an adventurous Siamese who wanders around town. He manages to help solve a kidnapping, bringing DC’s owners into contact with FBI Agent Zeke Kelso. Hijinks ensue and all ends happily.

Kelso Mountain is a challenging climb.
INFLUENCER BABY NAME
The baby name Kelso got a boost when YouTuber Dude Dad gave the name to his youngest. His real name is Taylor Calmus. He and wife Heidi share four children, all with O-ending names: daughter Juno and sons Theo, Otto, and Kelso. The couple lives in Colorado and were inspired by the mountain.
Kel- names have been around for ages. Kelsey peaked in the early 1990s, following 1960s and 70s favorite Kelly. On the boys’ side, names like Kellan and Kellen were popular earlier in the 2000s.
That means that Kelso as a first name would pick up on those trends and offer something a little fresher.
HOW POPULAR IS THE NAME KELSO?
So far, Kelso as a given name remains very rare. In 2025, just fourteen boys received the name.
While it could be gender-neutral, Kelso has never been used for even five girls in a single year.
RARE BUT WEARABLE
With ties to Scotland and that appealing O ending, the baby name Kelso feels like a rarity that just might work. In the United States, it’s especially appealing as a Colorado heritage pick.
But there’s an energy and unique character to Kelso that makes this last name rich with potential as a first.
