Oh, data! It fascinates me to see what’s most read here at Appellation Mountain. I used to look at these at the end of the year – and pretty much only at the end of the year! – but I’ve found it’s helpful to know what’s most popular when planning ahead.
And since I find it deeply interesting, I thought you might like a peak, too.
When I pulled the numbers, I was surprised to find that the most popular articles haven’t chagned
much from the first quarter of the year. The only new entry into the Top Ten was predictable: A Name for the New Princess, where I got my prediction for the royal baby name completely wrong!
Instead, I thought I’d take a closer look at the most popular Baby Name of the Day posts from the past quarter, and – a first for me! – the most popular names on Pinterest from the past month.
Read on for all the favorite baby names posts!
Favorite Baby Name Posts: Boy Baby Names of the Day
The Top Ten boy Baby Name of the Day posts weren’t too surprising. A few of these have been recently heard in Hollywood. Others just seem to be heating up. I excluded a handful of names, like Rumi, that skewed unisex. Otherwise, this list is the most viewed boy name posts, in descending order.
Favorite Baby Name Posts: Girl Baby Names of the Day
While there were some familiar standbys on this list, overall I thought the girls’ names were a little more surprising, and maybe a little more volatile than the boys’ names. Part of this might be because girls’ names are viewed more than boys names – it’s hard to measure with any precision, but I’d guess that girls’ names overall receive around 20% more views. Then again, I write about more girls’ names and there are more girls’ names in use overall.
Head spinning yet? Mine, too! Let’s move on to the most viewed baby names for girls in the last quarter.

I’ve had a Pinterest account for ages, but I’m just slowly beginning to figure out how to make it work. I mean – pinning pretty things, I’ve got that down. But here’s my first attempt at pulling data on the most-pinned names from Appellation Mountain. I couldn’t figure out how to tally them across categories – most liked, most re-pinned, etc. So here are the 25 most popular names, using a whole bunch of criteria.
Names with a * also made the most viewed posts for boys or girls, as listed above.
- Senna
- Torin
- Silas*
- Adeline
- Matthew
- Emmerich

That’s all for this quarter! Did any of your favorites make the most-viewed lists? Do you think some of these names are due for a big gain? I’m definitely watching Silas and Atlas.
Claudia is a name we’ve thought about recently, maybe with the nickname Lottie or Lodi (pronounced as it is in Europe).
Just a note: there’s lots of controversy about the etymology of the name Claudia and Claudius. There’s an alternate explanation that the name means something akin to “close” or “enclosure” (notice the same root), maybe having to do with decisiveness or safety.
