So it’s Super Bowl Sunday.

I kinda like it better as a typo: Superb Owl Sunday.

Football’s not my thing, but it’s hard to miss the stories around the players – especially when their kids have headline-worthy names.

Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany are the parents of daughters Sterling Skye and Golden Raye, along with son Patrick Lavon Mahomes III – better known as Bronze. Which is so good, I’ve added it to my list of number-inspired names. (Move over, Trace.)

I’ll be listening for other names, though really? I’m mostly here for the snacks.

If you, too, are looking for some distractions on this sports-centric weekend, I’ve got you covered.

Finds From Last Week

Speaking of themes, word is that Gisele Bündchen welcomed her third child, and she’s opted for matching middles. She and ex-Tom Brady (oh wait, football again …) are the parents of Vivian Lake and Benjamin Rein. Now Gisele and Joaquim Valente have welcomed a son together, and sources report that his middle name is River. So a subtle theme to water, which I kind of love. (And I think Vivian Lake might be one of my favorite first-middle combos.)

I love Steph’s thoughts on naming hiccups. Especially number three! Because ruling out your favorite name because your child might be teased is almost never the right choice.

This essay has been around for a while, but I can’t stop thinking about it: “I’m Named For A Jimmy Buffett Song. For Years, His Music Said What My Father Couldn’t.” Music connects us in deep, essential ways. Giving your child a name inspired by your favorite song? There’s so much power to that kind of choice.

Updating & Thinking About

Eunice! So unexpected, but a reader let me know it’s her new niece’s name. And just like that … it seemed fresh and fascinating for a child. (I maintain that nearly any old school name is resuscitated when we hear it on a baby.)

Ezekiel, because I really think that a) Zeke is this generation’s Zach and b) it’s sort of stunning how popular this name has quietly become. (Seriously, Top 50 in the US right now!)

Rumi, a name that surprised everyone when Beyonce announced her twins’ names. But I can imagine it catching on, even cracking the US Top 1000 in a few more years.
