Welcome to the world, Knickson Fyve!

Yup, a New York couple welcomed a son in 2026, just months after the Knicks finally won the NBA championship for the first time since 1973. In celebration of the team’s victory, they named him Knickson Fyve.

As in “Knicks in five,” a reference to the five games in the final round of the playoffs.

It’s an outlandish choice, and yet. The parents had previously chosen Lady Victoria for a girl or Prestige Wisdom for a boy. It’s not like they went with Knickson over James or Amelia.

They also found more meaningful connections between the name and their family’s story:

  • Dad’s name starts with the letter V, just like the Roman numeral that represents the number five. Number names as a source of quiet significance strike again!
  • Dad’s mom – Knickson’s paternal grandmother – had recently passed away. Back in the day, she worked for the Knicks organization as a scorekeeper. In fact, she was working back in 1973, the very last time the team won the championship.

That’s not just a name for a sports fan. That’s a sports-focused name that signals pride in their community, connecting multiple generations.

It also makes me wonder: have names fundamentally changed? Because this is both a modern, inventive, almost fanciful choice … but also a name with powerful connections to family and culture. The parents liked the idea that it was a name for a champion, but it’s also a name for someone who overcomes the odds and unites their followers.

Maybe names have become more meaningful but also more individual, more couched in personal story while feeling less universal, too.

It’s a sweet, funny story, but Knickson Fyve? That’s a powerful choice, too.

ELSEWHERE ONLINE

A few months ago, we talked about Namerology’s reports that Elara is the go-to girls’ name for AI-generated content. Now she has a brother. Apparently AI is obsessed with the name Elias for boys. In fairness, Elias has absolutely surged in the overall popularity rankings, even pre-AI-everywhere, so this one is a little different. Maybe?

I feel like I need a list of flower names for boys. Actress Bonnie Wright – you probably know her as Ginny Weasley from the Harry Potter movies – welcomed a son named Aster Sky with her husband, Andrew Lococo. Aster joins brother Elio Ocean. They’re not just nature-themed names; Wright now splits her time between making films of her own and serving as an environmental activist. In her son’s birth announcement she noted that he was “named after the star-shaped flower,” so it’s a fun mix of earth and sky in a single, surprising name.

UPDATING & THINKING ABOUT

Cosmo, of course is a flower name for boys, one with a hint of all things celestial, too. So that’s two for my list …

Selah has become one of those 21st century favorites that feels like it’s always been around. But … not really. It didn’t debut in US data at all until 1962!

Ronan is right up there with Jude … and Daniel and Alejandro and Fernando for boys’ names from song titles.

That’s all for this week. As always, thank you for reading and have a great week!
