I love a good list of lists, don’t you?

Let’s take a look back at the twelve most popular lists of 2024, as judged by page views, during calendar year 2024, along with a few of my personal favorites.

INSIDE OUT 2 PRODUCTION BABIES

Pixar started the trend. Disney followed. So did lots of other animation studios. I’ve been rounding up the lists for ages, and you can find them all here. Note to self: fill in all the movies I’ve missed during 2025? Hmmm …

OLD FASHIONED NICKNAME NAMES FOR GIRLS

This list was originally called Sadie’s Sisters, because I needed a list of names like Millie and Lottie, all rounded up in one place.

ACTION VERB NAMES FOR BOYS: CHASE AND SWAY

Word names are big, but most of them are nouns. That’s what makes choices like Chase, Dash, and Wade so fun, and maybe opens the door to surprising possibilities like Track and Link, too.

NAMES LIKE CHARLOTTE: FRANCES, FLORENCE, ADELAIDE

A rule of naming: we’re always looking for substitutes for the most popular choices. Sometimes finding those substitutes is challenging. (Is Ida really a swap for Mia?) Other times, it’s crazy fun to brainstorm the obvious choices. That’s true for Charlotte, a polished, classic name for a girl that opens the door to lots more polished, classic lovelies.

ROSE NAMES: ROSALIE, ROSEMARY, PRIMROSE

Speaking of polished and lovely, I give you a riot of Rose names.

THISBE AND THORA: NAMES STARTING WITH TH

Theodore is a Top Ten favorite for boys, so maybe it’s no surprise that we’re wild for TH names for our daughters, too. At least in theory … because Thisbe, Thora, and lots of the options on this list fail to make the current Top 1000.

EV NAMES FOR GIRLS: EVELYN, EVERLY, EVADNE

If TH names for girls are relatively rare, EV names are everywhere.

SPUNKY GIRL NAMES: PIPPA, ROMY, AND MORE

The word “spunky” bothers me. It seems a little old-school, maybe even borderline insulting. But, but, but … it’s The Word that describes a category of names that are just marvelous. Energetic and bold, fun to say. They’re names that promise adventure. Given how often this list is read, I suspect the imperfect “spunky” captures all of those qualities in a way no other word does.

FAIRY TALE PRINCE NAMES: BAYARD, MACEO, VALOR

Romantic, bold names for boys that tend to be a little on the longer side? They might sound like something out of a fairy tale, but if Sebastian can rank in the US Top Twenty, why not Raphael and Caspian, too?

ADALIA TO ZINNA: GIRL NAMES ENDING WITH IA

Speaking of popular, Sophia and Amelia and Mia and Olivia suggest that girl names ending with IA are having a moment. A big moment – that’s four out of the Top Ten names! No surprise this list is a perpetual favorite.

NUMERIC BABY NAMES: UNA, IVY, FINN, ELEVEN

Why do I love number names? They can be obvious or subtle. It’s a fascinating way to add meaning to a name, too. A birth date, wedding date, or other significant moment might inspire a number name.

WIZARDING WORLD NAMES: FIND YOUR HARRY POTTER NAME

Wait, is this still a thing? I’ve noticed this list ranking, week after week, and sure enough … it’s the #1 list on the site for 2024. Two thoughts: first, the Harry Potter reboot in the works at Max might be driving some of this. But mostly? This remains a powerful, influential fandom. Beyond that, the language of the Wizarding World is surprisingly pervasive, changing the names chosen by even families who have never heard the word Muggle.

HONORABLE MENTION

NATURE PLUS NAMES

A list too new to make the Most Popular Lists 2024, but a fascinating new trend to know.

GREAT BIG LIST OF HIGH-FLYING BIRD NAMES

A perpetual favorite. One of the lists influenced by what I named my daughter.

1885 BABY NAMES

Quirky finds from back in the day, proving that we’ve always been creative about what we name our children.

And those are the Most Popular Lists 2024!
