The baby name Doveva is a true rarity with an appealing sound.
Thanks to Megalady for suggesting our Baby Name of the Day.
WHAT DOES THE NAME DOVEVA MEAN?
The “dov” sound is common in Hebrew, including:
- Dov, meaning bear
- Dova is a feminine form of Dov
- Dovit is sometimes seen, too
- Dovra, meaning raft
- Dovid, a Yiddish form of David
- Dovev, meaning “to draw out,” or whisper
Logically, Dovev would seem to share Dovev’s meaning.
Other sources suggest that Doveva means graceful.
Two more theories:
- The Old Testament name Tobiah is more like Toviyah in the original Hebrew, which, in turn, sounds closer to Doveva. It’s possible there’s a link, or even another lost name.
- In Sanskrit, Devaki, Devaka, and Devi are feminine names derived from a word meaning divine or celestial.
- Dovaidas and Dovaide are Lithuanian names meaning gift.
- It’s also similar to the word devotion, which inspired the name Devota.
- And if you’re wondering about Dover, as in the place name? It comes from an old British word meaning “the waters.”
And here’s a Dova with a fantastically unique name story.
WHAT ABOUT DOVE?
Both Dove and Dovie have appeared in the US Top 1000 in small numbers over the years.
It’s possible it’s related to one of the Hebrew names above.
But Dove is most often the name of a bird, family Columbidae. The bird name’s exact origins are uncertain, but by the twelfth century, the word douve appeared in Middle English.
Doves symbolize peace and innocence. In Christianity, it represents the Holy Spirit, a common motif in religious art. Because they can signal hope and renewal, the image is often used around the new year.
The Spanish girl’s name Paloma means dove. So does the Late Latin Columba, which survives as Callum and Malcolm.
But while the baby name Doveva probably doesn’t come from the avian name, our love of bird names makes it more compelling today.
STYLISH SOUND
If the baby name Doveva didn’t exist, someone might’ve invented it.

IT’S NOT ITALIAN, BUT …
Italian speakers might hear doveva as a form of the verb dovere.
The simplest translation is “to owe,” but it implies a duty more than a debt, along the lines of “you owe it to yourself.” Or the phrase doveva succedere – it had to happen.
There’s no evidence that the Italian phrase has inspired a given name – ever. Still, it’s tempting to twist this coincidence into a poetic new, deeper meaning for the baby name Doveva.
HOW POPULAR IS THE NAME DOVEVA?
The baby name Doveva has never appeared in US popularity data.
That’s not just the US Top 1000.
It’s never been given to even five girls in a single year of birth.
Masculine form Dovev is nearly as rare.
