Agree or Disagree: Kevin-with-a-T

Welcome to this week’s edition of name news 8.25.24!

I recently heard the comedian Mandal (NSFW) complain about his real name: Tevin. Kevin-with-a-T.

I hate my name, ’cause it’s a second-rate name. Kevin is the premier name in the Evan family of names. And I know that because every time I tell somebody my name, they’re like oh, it’s like Kevin, but with a T. Which means you heard my name. You just want me to know you think it’s stupid, bro.

Wait, what?

I’ve always been good with the idea that a slight twist on a name can work beautifully.

“Fia, it’s like Mia with an F.”

“Thora, like Nora with a Th.”

And so on and so on … but am I wrong?

Or is it only wrong if it’s a creative invention? “Cashton, like Ashton with a C” might be more of a challenge than, say, Carina, which happens to rhyme with Marina, even though neither name feels dominant.

But I’m adding it to my list of possible red flags, though I think it’s more yellow …

What’s your favorite boys’ name beginning with an R? Names like Reign, Rhodes, and Raphael have made this a white-hot initial in recent years. River, Remy, and Rome have become mainstays.

Fascinated by the concept of Light Academia. Also, both of my kids’ given names are on this list, along with one niece and one nephew. Maybe Light Academia is my family’s vibe and I never knew it?!

  1. Tevin reminds me of the OMITB character Tobert. I think that maybe because Fia and Thora and so on are names in their own right, they feel a little less like someone trying to get creative with an already good name? I don’t know, but I feel like they fall on the right side of a line while Tevin and Tobert maybe don’t.
