July went by so fast! It’s already time for the final match-up in the New Names Showdown 2025! Get ready for the girls’ final, where your vote decides which name will join the winners’ circle.
As a reminder, every year the United States Social Security Administration updates the most popular baby names: 1,000 for girls and 1,000 for boys. Inevitably, some names leave, while others return or debut.
The annual New Names Showdown is about those returning or debuting names. Which are the best of the best? Which will likely continue to climb?
I choose the names that strike me as most interesting. (I know, that’s not much of a criteria, but it’s an eclectic collection by its very nature.)
And then your votes decide which is really the top of the new and returning names. Your choice will join:
- Seraphina (2024)
- Marigold (2023)
- Guinevere (2022)
- Etta (2021)
- Elodie (2020)
- Zora (2019)
- Marlowe (2018)
- Sylvie (2017)
- Arden (2016)
We’ll vote in just a minute, but first, let’s look at results of the last round.

Romy bested Tilly with almost 55% of the vote. Two short, ends-with-y names faced off in the first match. The voting could’ve almost gone either way. But glam, vaguely unisex Romy won out past sweet, vintage Millie substitute Tilly.
Elsa crushed Arisbeth with nearly 83% of the total. Both names owe their origins to Elizabeth. But while Arisbeth is a modern invention popular with Spanish-speaking families, Elsa is a time-tested favorite. We let it go during peak-Frozen, but now the extended Yellowstone universe has brought it back center stage.
i mean theyre both short sweet names. this is tough
