A BROTHER FOR WYATT EMERY
Julie writes:
We have a three year old son, Wyatt Emery, and our second son will be here in April. Our list of names is long, but nothing feels like the one. And I can’t stop myself from adding names to our list, which isn’t helping.
What we love about Wyatt’s name: it sounds like a Western name. We live in an east coast city now, but I’m from Colorado and my husband is from Wyoming.
Because our girl name is Lainey, we don’t want to use Laine/Lane for a boy.
Names we have considered:
- Silas – love Wyatt and Silas together, but don’t want Wy and Sy
- Emmett – but very close to Wyatt’s middle name
- Ezekiel/Zeke – we like Zeke better than Ezekiel, especially with our last name
- Colton – husband likes, I’m meh
- Cody – husband likes, I’m meh
- Austin – we don’t have any ties to Texas, so I’m not sure I like it
- Denver – I’m from Colorado, but not Denver, so again, not sure (but I do like Aspen for a girl, so maybe I’m wrong about this?)
- Rowan – don’t want a unisex name and we know two girls named Rowan
- Ranger – seems too much/don’t like titles as names
- Jack – we know a lot of Jacks/Jacksons
- Grayson – I really like, my husband is meh
- Knox – I really like, my husband is meh
- Levi – might be the name, except friends just named their baby Levi. I think we could still use it, but doesn’t feel as exciting as it did before, if that makes sense
- Logan – always loved this name, but it’s kind of faded for me now
- Van/Vaughn – maybe, but not sure it’s enough name
- Cal/Callahan – I think I like Cal better than Callahan, but not sure if it could be short for something else
- Granger – love the sound, but is it too Harry Potter? Really don’t like that association
- Heath – like the sound so much, and my husband is okay with Heath, but I feel like it gets a mostly negative reaction when I suggest it
- Thomas – just a name I’ve always liked, feels a little too ordinary but I do like the sound
- Carson – I like it, not sure if it’s right
- Ford – kind of love it, husband isn’t sure
- Montgomery – we probably wouldn’t use it, but I think Monty is adorable
- Waylon – the latest name I’ve added to my list
- Owen – another name I really like, but it goes on and off my list
- Dutton – we loved Yellowstone, but did we love it this much?!
Our last name sounds like Purse-plus-Elle.
Please read on for my response and leave your thoughtful suggestions in the comments.

AS WESTERN AS WYATT
Abby replies:
Congratulations on your new son!
It’s clear you’ve done lots of work already, and you do have a good sense of your style. Looking for new names is fun, too, right? We can endlessly imagine possible futures for our families and our children while we browse list after carefully curated list.
But as our due date gets closer? It’s time to focus on the names that best meet our criteria.
You’re looking for a heritage choice. Something that connects your east coast baby boy to his roots in Colorado and Wyoming.
In addition, the name has to pair well with Wyatt, leave space for a possible daughter named Lainey in the future, and work with your last name.
I’m going to suggest we evaluate your current list and find new names based on these criteria:
- Your son’s name should be familiar. Almost certainly ranked in the US Top 1000, maybe even in the Top 100.
- We’re looking for a name that feels current. Wyatt is a name with lots of twenty-first century energy. His brother’s name should match.
- Nickname-proof is probably better. I’m guessing you sometimes call Wyatt “Wy,” but in general, we’re probably looking for a complete name – though I can see that something like Ezekiel-called-Zeke challenges that thinking.
EVALUATING YOUR CURRENT LIST
Based on your current list, I’m going to drop Silas (nickname conflict); Rowan (unisex name); Logan (sounds like a former favorite); Ezekiel/Zeke, Callahan/Cal (nickname concerns); Colton, Cody, Knox (one parent dislikes and I think they’re probably right); Heath, Granger, Montgomery, Ranger (maybe too different); Emmett, Austin, Denver, Dutton, Jack, Van/Vaughn, Thomas, Owen (just not a fit).
That leaves six names, and I’ll rank them in this order.
5. CARSON, FORD
I think Carson and Ford both strike the same balance between traditional and Western as Wyatt. But if it’s a maybe, I’ll keep them near the bottom of my list.
4. WAYLON
What a great name! But … is Wyatt and Waylon too close? Some families wouldn’t mind, but you’re hesitating to repeat a syllable from Wyatt’s middle name.
3. LEVI
Possibly my top choice for you, though I understand what you mean about it feeling less special now that there’s another baby in your circle with the same name.
2. EMMETT
Yes, it repeats part of Wyatt’s name. That shows that you probably really like it. Also: Wyatt Emery and Emmett Levi? Or Wyatt Emery and Emmett Callahan? I barely notice it.
1. GRAYSON
If your husband could warm to Grayson, I think pairs so well with Wyatt. It’s similar in terms of popularity. If you do shorten their names to Wy and Gray, there’s zero conflict. And Grayson sounds like a slightly more polished take on Waylon, a midpoint between Waylon and Carson.
FRESH SUGGESTIONS
I’ll add just a few new ideas to consider.
BOONE
I love the meaning: good. And it has a strong, distinctive, Western sound that matches well with Wyatt.
CALLUM
Another thought for a Cal- name.
JESSE
Like Levi, this is an Old Testament name with ties to the Wild West.
TRACE
Like Boone, it’s brief and complete, with a strong vowel sound.
Overall, my top pick from my list is probably Boone. It’s upbeat and established, but also rich in Western bona fides.
I’ll make my top suggestion Grayson Boone, though I love the idea of Emmett Levi, too.

I like Levi! Wyatt and Levi sound great together.
A few other ideas:
Bo
Boone
Cash
Reed
Arlo
Sawyer
Flynn
How about Stetson?
Nothing is more wild west iconic than a stetson hat.
Wyatt Emery and Stetson Zane Purse+ell
If you really want a nickname, you could always use Sonny.
I thought of Landry, but it is too close to Lainey (and seems very feminine to me).
Coleman is a well-known camping gear brand. It gives you the nickname Cole.
Wyatt Emery and Coleman Boone Purse+ell
Rocky might be too on-the-nose for you, but the Rocky Mountains dominate those states. Rockwell is a more formal option, but it *almost* rhymes with your surname.
Wyatt Emery and Rocky Waylon Purse+ell
Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame) might make a nice middle.
Lander (WY) might make a great middle option, too.
If you want a REALLY adventurous middle name, you could use Buffalo or Bison. THAT would get everyone’s attention at graduation! We knew a guy with the middle name of Catfish, and we thought he was the coolest.
Best wishes to you as your family grows! Congratulations!
Great list. I love Wyatt and Monty as a full name from your list. From Abby’s, Jesse and Callum are great (loving the double consonant connection). From the comments, I like Calvin nn Cal, Wesley, Ellis (nn Eli) and Cole. I have cousins who gravitate toward these names and we have a Cody, a Jett, a Weston, and a Beau. Wyatt and Beau.
I know twin brothers named Waylon and Wyatt. They live in Texas, and their names are kind of perfect, matched but not too close.
I also really like Cal with Wyatt. Callahan is cute, and I like the suggestions of Callum and Calloway. Does Calvin appeal? Or Caleb? The sound isn’t quite there but the letters are.
Van is nice too, what about Van as a nickname for Donovan or Sullivan? Wyatt and Sullivan. Sullivan Heath Purse+ell, Sullivan Silas Purse+ell. Wyatt and Donovan. Donovan Cody Purse+ell, Donovan Levi Purse+ell.
I also quite like Granger and Heath and want to encourage you to use them, regardless of other people’s reactions. Wyatt and Granger. Granger Thomas Purse+ell. Granger Vaughn Purse+ell. Wyatt and Heath. Heath Carson Purse+ell. Heath Waylon Purse-ell.
Fun one! I was coming here to suggest Grady and I see it’s been mentioned. I think it’s an awesome alternative to Grayson, even more cowboy to me. Love the suggestions of Boone, Brooks, Otis, Ezra.
I think Levi is the only name you both like enough to use so I’d keep it on the list. Or why not just Zeke?? I agree Emmett doesn’t need to be off the table, but it’s actually the repeating ending with Wya-tt that bugs me more.
Riffing / building off your list…(that sound good with your surname and don’t rule out Laine/y)
Beaumont nn Monty
Calloway nn Cal
Ellis
Pierce
Elroy
Flynn
McCoy
I would love to suggest Twain but I feel like it’s off the table in case of Laine/y.
I think Denver is totally fine for a CO connection even though you’re not from Denver. I’d add it back to the list (or maybe even for a dog for the future)
Oh I love a good cowboy name! Wyatt Emery is great!
I especially love Carson and I agree with Abby on Grayson being a great choice as well.
I noticed a lot of consonant heavy names on your list, especially Gr- and R sounds (Grayson, Granger, Logan, Ranger, Carson) so how about Grady or Morgan?
-Wyatt and Grady
-Wyatt and Morgan (maybe too Earp bro-ish though? Maybe most people wouldn’t make the connection)
Callahan/Cal, Waylon, Owen, Rowan, and Logan all have L sounds or long O sounds and end in -n so how about Nolan?
-Wyatt and Nolan
Jack, Carson, Cody made me think of Jacoby
-Wyatt and Jacoby. He could be just Jacoby but Jake, Jack, and Coby are all nickname options as well
If you love Lainey for a girl but are willing to give it up or aren’t having anymore kids after this baby then I’d like to suggest Zane! Such a great cowboy cool name.
-Wyatt and Zane
A few other suggestions that may appeal to you:
-Wyatt and Brooks
-Wyatt and Davis
-Wyatt and Wesley “Wes”
-Wyatt and Grant
-Wyatt and Hayes
-Wyatt and Mason
Congratulations on your brother for Wyatt Emery
Names that come to mind are :
Dawson /Lawson
Ashton
Jed /Judd
Jesse
Maverick
Mason
Cody /Colby
Ezra
Gideon- Deon /Dion
Zachary
Lincoln /Logan
Forrest
Seth
Barnes /Barnaby
Jared
Ike /Isaac
Finley
Hi!
What do you think about Casper? It is my little nephew’s name & suits him to a “t.” Casper is a city in Wyoming, so perhaps the West connection would be through that. (I bought him some shirts with his name on it from people who were making them for fans of the city when he was very little.)
Wyatt & Casper
Also…what about Zebulon-nn Zeb? Zebulon Pike is who Pike’s Peak is named for & you get the cute nn Zeb.
Wyatt & Zebulon (Zeb)
Also…
Otis
Cole (instead of Colton?)
Colt (instead of Colton?)
Callan (for the Cal nn)
Shane
Davis
Landon
Laramie (I think it may be unisex though & perhaps better for a girl)
Landon
Romer
Larimer – more masculine & name of someone who used to make & sell spurs)
Cody (also a place in Wyoming)
Zion (natl park)
Best wishes!!
Colton and Cody are great with Wyatt! Can you reconsider?
I love Emmett, but I see the issue.
Carson and Waylon are great options, too!
I suggest:
Graham
Carter
Beckett
Quincy
Judson
Boyd
