Could it be that Kim and Kanye decided to play it safe when naming baby #2?
Their new son is here, and his name is Saint.
Just Saint. As with daughter North, there’s either no middle name, or no middle name has been announced.
While North was a pretty standout choice for a girl, Saint has a steady history of sparing use as a boys’ name. They’re not even the first high profile couple to choose the name. There’s also:
- Selma Blair’s Arthur Saint
- Dave Grohl’s Ophelia Saint
- Pete Wentz’ Saint Lazslo
It fits with so many trends. It’s short and bold, even audacious, which reminds me of modern names like Jax and Jett.
A year ago, I wrote in this piece for Nameberry: “Saint isn’t a title you can wear in life – but it might be an on-trend first name on the upswing.” File this one with Royalty, Duke, King, Princess, and Kourtney Kardashian’s son, Reign.Â
I’m divided on the name. It seems like a deeply spiritual choice that can’t be used in secular terms. But then, I don’t know Kim or Kanye personally. Perhaps they intend the name to be truly aspirational, something to inspire their son to greatness. (Pharrell’s explanation of Rocket changed the way that I thought about that name. And Pharrell is one of the Kim-and-Kanye friends who loved the idea of North.)
While it wasn’t on my list of possible names for North’s brother, I do think they’ve matched their style nicely – bold word names that have a meaning-rich aspect.
Now I’d love to hear from you: What do you think of Saint?
Very underwhelming choice. Your picks, Abby, were far better. Loved Brave West for a boy.
This one fails the starbucks test for me… also can’t imagine myself at the shops saying ‘Saint! stop that!’ but I guess k &k won’t have to do either of those things so maybe it works for them?
I think they were also trying to fit with the due date of Dec 25, which is a nod to Saint Nick.
As long as his middle isn’t secretly Nicholas!
(I did read somewhere that it was Robert, any confirmation?)
