Eloise nicknames range from the obvious Ellie to the sparky Lola, with plenty of choices in between.

Of course, many parents choose Eloise intending to use the name in full. And why not?

It’s a great choice!

But now that Eloise has become a Top 100 favorite, it’s worth considering whether a shortened form of this lovely French name would appeal.

ABOUT THE GIRL’S NAME ELOISE

The name Eloise started out as Heloise, from the German Helewidis. That names combines the elements heil – healthy or whole with wid – wide.

We tend to assume Eloise has a French origin, thanks to the doomed medieval love affair between scholar and theologian Peter Abelard and the well-born, educated Héloïse – his former student.

Their story ends with both taking religious orders. (Heloise eventually became an abbess while Peter lived out his days as a monk.)

Both left behind writings, including intellectual works as well as their love letters. The letters, especially, have remained well-known and widely-related across the centuries. Doubtless that helps to explain the survival of the name Eloise.

In fact, it’s more popular than ever today, ranking #64 in the US as of 2024. It fits with old-fashioned names like Hazel, Flora, Nora, Violet, and Ivy.

The gently French style appeals, too – think of Josephine, Genevieve, or Margot. They all sound like a sister’s name to Eloise.

Famous figures by the name are plentiful, but readers will immediately think of one: Kay Thompson’s six-year-old who lives at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. She’s an enduring literary figure.

With so many girls answering to this rising favorite, it’s no surprise that Eloise nicknames could come in handy.

Worth noting: some of these work every bit as well for Eloisa or Elouise, and a few could stand in for the name Louise, too.

ELLA

American singer Ella Fitzgerald makes this name jazzy and cool; but she’s just one of many Ellas. The name currently ranks in the US Top 100, and has since 2002. That makes Ella slihgtly more popular than Eloise, in fact.

ELLE

From Elle Woods to Stranger Things’ Eleven-called-El, this brief, sophisticated name is surprisingly versatile, too.

ELLIE

Everybody loves Ellie, a nickname name that might be short for Elizabeth, Eleanor, or any number of names, including Eloise. Or it can just stand on its own, a very popular name independently.

ELSIE

Sweetly vintage Elsie traditionally comes from Elizabeth (make that Elisabeth), but works nicely for Eloise, too, thanks to that S sound.

LOIS

A separate name from the Greek word meaning “better,” Lois was heard in the New Testament. But it might serve as a short form for Eloise. With actress Rachel Brosnahan reinventing the Lois Lane character for the 2025 Superman movie, Lois might just get a boost.

LOLA

The strong “lo” sound in the middle of Eloise opens the door for this vibrant nickname option.

LOLLIE, LOLLY

Lolly is associated with traditional names ranging from Laura to Dolores, Charlotte to Eulalia. Some make more sense than others. It might even work for, say, Penelope or Colleen. But Lolly also follows from Eloise.

LOU

When it comes to short names, Lou is sparky choice that sounds like a perfect option for the name Eloise. Also heard as a middle name, and occasionally as a first name, too, there’s a sleek quality to Lou that seems quite appealing.

LULU

If Lou works nicely, why not double it for Lulu?

SUNNY

Just like Daisy and Pearl sometimes derive from Margaret’s meaning and other associations, this nickname takes inspiration from a sound-alike. In Greek, helios refers to the sun. The French and German name has separate roots. Still, it’s a strong resemblance and makes Sunny a possible nickname choice.

WEEZIE

Probably not the nickname parents would intend, but possibly a form that evolves from a childhood pronunciation of Eloise. It’s cuddly and fun.

  2. If Lois, Lou, and Lulu work, Lucy might? It feels more natural to Elouise, but I think it could be really cute!

  3. My niece (13) is Eloise. We used to call her โ€œEloโ€ a bit, but she really prefers โ€œEloise.โ€ I think it is a beautiful name, and sometimes a nn isnโ€™t needed.

    1. Yup, one of the Eloises I know is Elo most of the time, so you should add it to your list! Itโ€™s a fun one.
