I’ll admit that I probably wouldn’t have posted news about Bachelorette couple Trista and Ryan Sutter.
Except.
They named their daughter Blakesley Grace.
She certainly fits in with Avery, Delaney and the like. But I still find Blakesley rather odd. Apparently it is an Old English place name and legitimate surname choice – but does it feel like they tried awfully hard? Or maybe Trista has a grandma Blakesley?
Thing is, I thought their son’s name – Maxwell Alston – was quite nice.

My Little Pony – SophieGray, that’s it exactly! While Poppy and Daisy are a little bit nickname-ish to me, I think they’re fine with more substantial middle names. Ditto Petal. It’s wacky, but wearable – ‘specially if you’re growing up in the spotlight.
It’s the whole thing – Petal Blossom Rainbow – that feels wildly overdone.
Lola, I agree – Poppy, Daisy and Pansy sound like a great sibset. A little matchy for my tastes, but still.
And Emmy Jo, thanks for putting it into words – the k-s-l thing is the problem. I agree with you – Waverley, etc. are fabulous. But this one just doesn’t fit.
I wouldn’t mind Blake on a girl. Even though it is currently a Top 100 pick for boys, with Blake Lively on Gossip Girl, I wouldn’t be surprised to meet a few more.
And K, you’re right – the first and last names do sort of slur together in an unappealing fashion.

YUCK! Blakesley is a horrible name. There is a Blakeslee in Pennsylvania about an hour and a half away from me, which makes me dislike the name more. Blake for a girl is bad enough. They gave their son a good name, so I was expecting something classic for their daughter too. It is really disappointing.
Petal Blossom Rainbow made my eyeballs roll around in their sockets. Rainbow is too much. I don’t like Dahlia either, but it’s alot better than Petal. Blossom just reminds me of the Powerpuff Girls, or Powderpuff Girls as Eric and I call them. Daisy is decent and Poppy isn’t too bad but their middle names, Boo and Honey sound too childish.
My biggest objection is that when you say Blakesley Sutter too fast it can start to sound like Slut-er. That’s not a word you want in close association with your daughter’s name. I don’t know if I’d like Blakesley if the Sutters had a different last name, but I think I would have gone with a different first name.
I honestly feel like I have some kind of speech impediment whilst trying to get this name out! I don’t find the name even remotely feminine (or masculine even!), it just feels surnamey. And I’m rather impartial to Grace usually, but here I kind of warm to her a bit, because of the horror of Blakesley! Maxwell is pretty cool too; they do seem as though they tried a bit too hard 🙁
As for Petal Blossom Rainbow? Daisy is my favourite nn for Margaret, and I do adore Poppy (its DD’s mn), but Petal? Doesn’t do it for me. The whole combo is childish – but so were the others – this seems just too sugary sweet to go along with it. Like a name for a My Little Pony or something.
Blakesley is a mouthful. Like Emmy Jo said, there are a ton of acceptable “-ley” names, why go with one that’s so problematic?! Hadley Grace would be lovely.
Why do people insist on changing perfectly good boys names into useless stupid girls names.
Blake on a boy if perfectly fine. Blake on a girl is even acceptable compared to Blakesley! YUCK!
Pretty soon there will be nothing left to call your boys soon – they will all be thought of as girls names! (like the darling Ashley)

Blakesley is awfully hard to say. It’s that “k-s-l” consonant cluster in the middle.
I like the “-ley” place names, even weird ones like Oakley, Ackerley, Berkeley, Ainsley, and Waverley. I’d prefer them for boys, though I can see how the softer-sounding ones (like Waverley) have crossed over to the girls’ side.
Whether it is or isn’t, Blakesley feels like a modern invented combo, more akin to Brookelynn than Waverley.
Well, at least she didn’t spell it Blayksleigh.
Blakesley? I can hope it’s a family name but these days, I doubt it It’s another case of “Take a boy’s name :Blake: and girly it up with that fakey ending :sley: Blergh. ooh,Blerghsley!
Maxwell’s alright (it’s coffee to me) and at least little badly named girl has the pretty (if generic in the middle) Grace to fall back on but brother definitely got the better name here. Yep, definitely feels try too hard. Very contrived Blakesley (which I have to think about how to dspell as I type) Yuck.
Any thoughts on the newest Oliver girl? Petal Blossom Rainbow Oliver. (I wish they’d gone with Petunia, Dahlia or even Pansy! Poor Petal with the generic flower name and sisters Poppy & Daisy!)
