Advice: Sometimes It’s Two Tracks

Here’s something that hit me the other day: maybe you’re struggling with a naming decision because you’re feeling lots of pressure from your mom or mother-in-law. Or your sister has given you a long list of names she’s reserved. Some kind of drama that’s not about the names … but about your relationships.

In these cases? Try to separate your decision into two tracks.

The first track? Finding the name that you and your partner lover. The right name for your child.

The second track? Deciding how to handle other’s reactions when they hear you won’t be naming your baby boy after grandpa Albert … or whatever expectation you’re facing.

You can hear more about this strategy on the AM Baby Name Patreon.

  • Olin, because Babypool. Of course.
  • Holland, a unisex place name possibility that seems at least as wearable as London.
  • Vashti, a personal favorite, long overlooked.

Favorite Blog Posts & Name Lists

Is it fall yet? Because I’ve got Goth names on the brain … and I’ve added even more possibilities to this list of gorgeous, mostly rare – but some surprisingly mainstream – options.

Vera and Noah top the Swedish charts. Plus even better … Nancy’s sharp eyes spotted that Sweden now shares data on rare names. Virvla! Lillebror! They sound like Ikea product names, but they’re (also) children, and I’m so delighted to see this list.

If you love Eloise, you might likewell, this list from Name Harbour. My favorites are Eloise + Matilda and Eloise + Oliver.

Speaking of Eloise … the Linda Lindas are opening for Green Day on their summer concert tour. The North American leg just kicked off last week. And wow – Eloise, Bela, Lucia, Mila might still be teeangers – the oldest is 19! – but they ROCK. Obviously, I have to be a fan for a dozen reasons, including the fact that on stage they go by Linda Linda No. 1, Linda Linda No. 2, and so on …

Personalized Advice

Want to talk over a naming decision? Calls are open for the next two(ish) weeks. I’m taking a summer break after that, but please look for new dates at the end of August.

AM Readers suggested the most amazing middle names for this family. They’ve promised to update with their final choice. I’m so excited to hear what they choose! If you’d like a public #namehelp post, please email your question to appmtn (at) gmail.

If you’d rather keep your question private, consider ordering a private #namehelp post here. The summer sale is just about over, but spots are open into early September.

That’s all for this week! As always, thank you for reading and have a great week!
