Adam Sandler is a dad again! His wife Jackie gave birth to the couple’s second daughter on November 2, and reports are that everyone is doing fine.

While their firstborn’s name – Sadie Madison – isn’t our style, we rather like her jazzy vibe. But if Sadie is a diminutive that can stand alone, the couple has gone deep into nickname territory for their second daughter’s given name: Sunny Madeline.

  1. Sadie and Sunny go well together but I have to agree they are both names that do not fit an adult. Sadie to me as well will always be the abbreviation for Sarah and Sunny is just cute as a nick name. I do love the name Madeline and Madison. Madeline has been around for ages so is definitely not trendy.

  2. Way too matchy! Eek!

I actually think Sadie is rather sweet. It’s one of the few nicknames that I think can stand on its own. I’ve never been crazy about Sarah (it feels very plain to me), so I’d actually prefer a Sadie to be just Sadie. Madison isn’t bad since it’s meaningful to him, but I’d prefer Sadie with something that feels a bit more refined. Sadie Madeline would have been lovely.

Sunny is horrendous, and Madeline and Madison are far too similar. Lola, I love your suggestions of what Sunny could have been short for. I’d rename his second girl Sonya Marigold (“Sadie and Sonya” or “Sadie and Sunny”) or Lucy Eloise (“Sadie and Lucy” or “Sadie and Sunny”).

  3. I really like Sadie as a nickname for Sarah, but I can live with it as a given name. I hate Madison, but I understand why he used it. I much prefer Madeline to Madison, but I’m tired of both of them. Sunny? That’s just ridiculous. I can’t stand it! I don’t like how matchy their names are, either.

  4. I don’t hate Madeline, it’s just not my thing, especially if it’s pronounced mad-a-lyn instead of mad-a-line. I agree with you on Madelyn, Lola. That is terrible. And I’ve seen worse than that too. Lyn names are overrated. I prefer Sara to Sadie as well. My sister’s name is Sarah with an H and my other sister is Cassandra (Cassie for short). Sarah never went by Sadie, but my grandma’s cousin Rose/Rosie’s mother did, and her real name was Sarah too.

  5. I don’t like Sunny as a name. It’s too similar to the male name Sonny and doesn’t seem professional. I’m not crazy about Madeline either. I prefer it spelled Madeleine and even then it is extremely popular. I’m with you though. Sadie Madison isn’t my style either. I really hate Madison and pretty much any other trendy name and I see Sadie as a nickname for Sarah rather than a full name. I also don’t like the idea of siblings having names beginning with the same letter. They’re too matchy for my taste especially since their middle names are also very close to each other.

Congrats to Adam Sandler and Jackie anyway.

  6. PS When I said “I don’t like them” I was referring to the names, not the Republican, Jewish , northeastern US guys.

  7. Look, he’s not a serious fella, and apparently he uses humor in his naming choices, too. They’re not my style (Sunny was the name of TWO of my dogs, though) and the middle names are beyond trite, but considering this is a Republican, Jewish guy from the Northeast US, cut him some slack: originality doesn’t come easy to people like that. 😉 Just kidding (and generalizing). I don’t like them, but I also don’t have to live with them.

On similar topic, did Jason Lee ever announce his new baby’s name? Or is he still too embarrassed?

  8. I knew a Sunny in high school. Her sisters were Jaide and Makaiyla. Early tryndees!!
Madeline is lovely, Madeleine is better.
Sadie’s nicknamey and Madison is horrible!!
    I really don’t like the matching initials…

  9. Argh. I don’t really like Adam Sandler, and I now know I really dislike his kid’s names as well. I would have loved to see him go for traditional Hebrew names. They’re just so nicknamey. And the matching initials are beyond cutesy.

  10. Congrats to them but I don’t like this one any more than the last. I understand Madison was for his production company (All his pictures are Happy Madison Productions) But when Sadie was born, I heartily wished she’d been Sara(h), nn Sadie. Alas, not to be. Sunny’s one step worse, in my book. I mean, Yeah, it’s servicable and yeah, if she wants to change it, Pop’s got the cash to spare but shouldn’t liveability be an issue right up front? I, unlike Laney don’t mind Madeline, at least it’s not Madelyn (and I’ve seen far worse than even Madelyn)! But Sunny makes me want to weep. Why not Channah, nn Sunny? Or even: Samiya, Sunila, Sunday or Sophie, Sonya/Sonja, Susan/Susanna(h), Elanor (means ‘star sun’ in Sindarin), Eloise (which some think may be related to the Greek helios, meaning sun. Any one of those nicknamed Sunny would have been lovely, truly.

That’s it, I’m mentally renaming his girls Sarah Madison & Elanor Madeline (they can keep their middles, I don’t mind Madison for him).
