Don’t you love a Cinderella story?

Thanks to Jenna for sharing this one about a woman named – yup, actually, legally – Cinderella. She disliked it as a child, but grew into her unusual name as an adult.

We often worry that an unusual name will burden our children in their most vulnerable years. What will the bullies say in middle school? But over the journey of a life, we often come to appreciate our names – the clunky family name handed down over generations, the one borrowed from a favorite song. We appreciate the story it tells, and the way it connects us to our loved ones and their worldviews.

And that feels right. We shouldn’t name for some anonymous, theoretical mean girl that our child might encounter at the age of nine or 19. We should name for a lifetime, and for the stories that we want our children to carry with them.

Speaking of unusual names, how ’bout Skywalker? The Netflix reboot of Little House on the Prairie debuts in early July, and Skywalker Hughes plays Mary Ingalls. And yes, it’s her given name.

Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury have named their son Midas, a little brother for Bambi. Reality television made the Fury family famous. Boxer Tommy is the younger brother of fellow boxer Tyson. Both appear in At Home With the Furys. 22 boys were named Midas in the US last year. We’ll have to see if it picks up in use.

So here’s the thing about OwenEventide Pennant Co shared this and I can’t un-see it!

UPDATING & THINKING ABOUT

Estelle is so lovely and restrained, a slightly more vintage take on sparky Stella.

Evander looks like an Evan-Alexander smoosh but it’s actually an independent name with plenty of history.

Elora stepped out of fantasy and into the popularity charts. Ella, Eloise, Aurora, Elora … it feels almost inevitable.

That’s all for this week. As always, thank you for reading – and have a great week!
