Looking at the ApMtn calendar for next week, the Names of the Day cupboard is bare after Sunday.

So help us out … post a name, and we’ll use it next week.

Thanks in advance for all of your creative and thoughtful ideas!

  1. Hmm… boys’ names? I’m not sure if you’ve discussed some of these or not but how about:

    Sirius
    Lucian
    Arden
    Carlisle
    Basil
    Tiernan
    Fabian
    Callum
    Reuben

  2. How is Saskia not on my list? She’s July 12. Great suggestion.

Luna will be July 14. (I just re-read the Harry Potters and remembered how much I love Luna Lovegood.)

I’ll pick up some of the others, but I’m ahead on girls’ name suggestions and lagging behind on boys, so I’ll hold off a bit for now. Unless you have some masculine monikers in mind?

  3. Believe it or not, two of your suggestions are already ON my calendar – I put them there myself, too, LOL!

I’m covering Hugo on June 9 – it’s my (fabulous) brother-in-law Hugh’s birthday, so I’ll actually touch on Hugh and Hugo.

And Iris, besides being a name I love, love, love, it’s also the Goo Goo Dolls song that spent so much time on the airwaves in the Summer of 1998. So it popped up when I was surfing for inspiration for names to write about in the Summer of 2008. (It’s a highly scientific process.) So she’s on my charts for June 12.

I’d rather not do Lucio so close to covering Lucia, though I suspect there’s a lot to talk about that’s completely differently. Still, I’ll skip him for now and cover Sebastian. It always strikes me as an over-the-top romantic name – kinda like calling your kid Romeo. Except that I actually kind of *like* Romeo, and I know a few little boy Sebastians who seem to wear the name well. So he’s June 27.

And Imogen … I went to school with someone who just called her daughter Imogen. A timely suggestion – we’ll cover her on June 28.

There is quite the musical theme going, isn’t there? I think I’ll save Viola (and Allegra and Aida and a few other suggestions) for a separate post on musical names.

As always, thanks for you inventive suggestions – they really make writing these fun!

  4. Some more suggestions – from shakespeare:
    Boy:
    Hugh – my grandfather’s name
    Lucio
    Sebastian

    Girl:
    Imogen
Iris – flower name that sounds fresh
Viola – picking up on the musical theme.

  5. Fabulous list, Jess! And while I’ve touched on some of these names in other posts, I haven’t covered any of them. 🙂

Let’s see … June 21 will be Cyrus. I’m intrigued by that name. I know a new baby Silas, but I’ve yet to meet a Cy. June 22 will be Romilly – I’ve done some digging on that name before, and I think it is quite a gem.

Sterling … is it a more subtle way to name your baby Cash or a clever virtue name for boys? We’ll discuss on June 23.

Speaking of virtue names, I intend to do a full post but let’s talk about Mercy on June 24.

Emmett is interesting. Is he an NFL star, singing otter or Elle Woods’ smart and loyal love interest in Legally Blonde? The name’s been worn by so many types of fellows. He’ll be June 25.

Speaking of Legally Blonde, the actress Holland Taylor played one of Elle’s professors. So let’s cover Holland on June 26!

Thanks for helping to fill the dance card. 🙂

  6. I’m new here (thanks to Elisabeth!) but I’d love to hear you talk about these:
    Cyrus
    Sterling
    Soren
    Abram
    Emmett
    Nash
    Montgomery or Monty

    Romilly
    Nina
Holland (not sure if you’ve already covered this one)
    Sylvie
    Olive
    Greta
    Scarlett
    Mercy

  7. Time to fill up the calendar again! Thanks for the suggestions. Starting at June 11, we’ll cover Gideon (one of my all time faves, Emmy Jo – how have I not already written about him?)

June 13: Julius. Beyond the orange drink and the Small Paul monkey!
June 14: Madrigal. Because really, there has to be another musical name besides Cadence!
June 15: Simeon. Can it overcome the unfortunate association with homophone Simian? I’m sensing a monkey theme for June.
June 16: Alethea. You’re right about it being a great option for Olivia.
    June 17: Marius. Fascinating choice!
June 18: Ophelia. Natalie, this is such a pretty name – but all I think of is “mad scene” – I wonder if there’s more to think about?

Thanks very kindly for the inspiration, and keep ’em coming!

  8. I’m sure you’ve seen my lists before, but here are some of my favorites for girls:
Belicia — a Mexican form of Elizabeth or Isabel
Moira — I just met a 2-year-old with this name
Susanna — Would you believe it’s not in the top 1000?
Isla — a popular choice in the UK, it hasn’t been in the US top 1000 since 1908
Madrigal — an interesting choice for someone wanting a musical name, and it’s certainly cuter than Madison!
Alethea — Greek for “truth,” it sounds very similar to the top-10 Olivia
Anneliese — a great twist on Ann or Elizabeth for the middle-name slot

    And for boys:
Hadrian — Why not, when Adrian is in the top 100?
Julius — sounds more fresh than the top-100 Julian
    Gideon
Simeon — given the popularity of biblical names, I’m surprised to see this at #926
    Miles
Marius — an appealing choice for Les Miserables fans
Gawain — an earlier form of the top-40 Gavin

  9. Here’s an idea for a topic: names you no longer consider viable for boys because they’ve crossed over to the girls’ side. Taylor, Morgan, and Avery come to mind, and historically Carol, Ashley, and Evelyn.
