Another, I forgot to mention, I’ve slotted Payton for 10/22. Technically, it’s a boy’s slot, but hey – this one really does seem to be gender neutral.

On your observation that Peyton and Nevaeh go together, there’s a Bratz Twins doll set where the girls are indeed known by those two names. Here’s a link to a Flickr photo, should you doubt: http://flickr.com/photos/14519050@N04/2614299906/

But really, they’re Bratz dolls – they make Barbie look super classy.

Hey Verity. Can you take a look at Peyton/Payton – masc or fem? I’d like to know where this came from and when i started exploding. I’m utterly sick of it, to be honest, and really only associate the F with Rebecca DeMornay, but am curious how this happened – especially since it rhymes with Satan and most of the gals who love Payton tend to love Nevaeh…

Hey, your post on Orla reminded me of a woman I knew growing up named Ora. Thinking of her made me think of someone else we both knew – Aviva. Would you look up these two names?

Happily! I was going to do Xiomara on that day, but I’ll move her to 10/18 and celebrate Ethan on his birthday.

Ethan was a finalist for my baby brother’s name in 1984, along with Evan, but he got a family name instead. (And, in my family’s unstoppable tradition, we call him by a nickname anyhow.)

    Walter on 10/8

Faye … that’s an interesting idea. She’s on the calendar for 10/15. As for Gay … I think it’s dead, at least for the next few decades.

BTW, I’ve hit a brick wall with Luzanna, even in the moldy old naming resources that usually give me some clue. I have a few theories, but my rule of thumb is that I have to see the actual spelling associated with a meaning, not just take a guess. I’m not done looking, but I’m still not putting her on the calendar … for fear I’ll have nothing to say when her day rolls around!

Verity – I just came across a suggestion for Faye as a middle name. What do you think of Fay or Faye as a NotD? It’s not too common anymore. Also, I have a friend whose mother is named Gay – and I have a neighbor named Gay, too. Do you see any chance that this name can come back?

Another, I can’t come up with a decent theory for Luzanna’s origins! I’ll try again tomorrow when I’m in the library and not dependent on my laptop and meager collection of reference materials at home. Luzanna definitely shows up in the historical record, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why – is she a slurred version of Louisiana? Or a variation of Lucianna? Intriguing … if I can find anything to write, I’ll put her on the calendar.

As for the boys, thank you and here we go:

    9/28: Wesley
    9/30: Romeo
    10/2: Clayton

I’ll pick up the other three as well … but now I’m officially behind on girls’ names!

    Verity –
Care to do an article on the -ella phenomenon? How about filler middle names and why they’re so popular?
I knew a girl named Luzanna. Want to tackle this one for NotD? How about musical names – I love Harmony and Melody, but can’t enjoy Cadence at all. Would you like to share your thoughts?
As for boys’ names, here are a few that interest me:
    Clayton
    Calvin
    Romeo
    Martin
    Walter
    Wesley

Thanks, Natalie! All are great suggestions.

I’ve already got Octavia slated for 8/8. 🙂

We’ll plug the rest in as follows:

August 21: Leisel – isn’t she one of the Sound of Music Von Trapps?
August 24: Dexter – how have I not written about Dex as NotD?!
    August 25: Elsa
August 26: Magnus – is it Will Ferrell that has a Magnus? The name has lots of buzz these days.

I’ll probably pick up the others, too, but I need to review all of my lists at some point – I fear I’m going to start duplicating!

    Thanks, Jess!

We’ve done Otis and Ottilie, so I’ll have to pass on Otto for the moment – I love him, but I feel like I’d rehash where I’ve recently been. But Orrin! That’s a new one. I’ve known someone by that name, but I think he was Oren … I know nothing about it, but check back on August 6 and he’ll be Name of the Day.

I’ve been thinking about Annika. She’ll be August 13. And Mallory – such a lovely sound, but can she overcome her meaning? Let’s make her August 15.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

How is Saskia not on my list? She’s July 12. Great suggestion.

Luna will be July 14. (I just re-read the Harry Potters and remembered how much I love Luna Lovegood.)

I’ll pick up some of the others, but I’m ahead on girls’ name suggestions and lagging behind on boys, so I’ll hold off a bit for now. Unless you have some masculine monikers in mind?

Believe it or not, two of your suggestions are already ON my calendar – I put them there myself, too, LOL!

I’m covering Hugo on June 9 – it’s my (fabulous) brother-in-law Hugh’s birthday, so I’ll actually touch on Hugh and Hugo.

And Iris, besides being a name I love, love, love, it’s also the Goo Goo Dolls song that spent so much time on the airwaves in the Summer of 1998. So it popped up when I was surfing for inspiration for names to write about in the Summer of 2008. (It’s a highly scientific process.) So she’s on my charts for June 12.

I’d rather not do Lucio so close to covering Lucia, though I suspect there’s a lot to talk about that’s completely differently. Still, I’ll skip him for now and cover Sebastian. It always strikes me as an over-the-top romantic name – kinda like calling your kid Romeo. Except that I actually kind of *like* Romeo, and I know a few little boy Sebastians who seem to wear the name well. So he’s June 27.

And Imogen … I went to school with someone who just called her daughter Imogen. A timely suggestion – we’ll cover her on June 28.

There is quite the musical theme going, isn’t there? I think I’ll save Viola (and Allegra and Aida and a few other suggestions) for a separate post on musical names.

As always, thanks for you inventive suggestions – they really make writing these fun!

Some more suggestions – from shakespeare:
    Boy:
    Hugh – my grandfather’s name
    Lucio
    Sebastian

    Girl:
    Imogen
Iris – flower name that sounds fresh
Viola – picking up on the musical theme.

Fabulous list, Jess! And while I’ve touched on some of these names in other posts, I haven’t covered any of them. 🙂

Let’s see … June 21 will be Cyrus. I’m intrigued by that name. I know a new baby Silas, but I’ve yet to meet a Cy. June 22 will be Romilly – I’ve done some digging on that name before, and I think it is quite a gem.

Sterling … is it a more subtle way to name your baby Cash or a clever virtue name for boys? We’ll discuss on June 23.

Speaking of virtue names, I intend to do a full post but let’s talk about Mercy on June 24.

Emmett is interesting. Is he an NFL star, singing otter or Elle Woods’ smart and loyal love interest in Legally Blonde? The name’s been worn by so many types of fellows. He’ll be June 25.

Speaking of Legally Blonde, the actress Holland Taylor played one of Elle’s professors. So let’s cover Holland on June 26!

Thanks for helping to fill the dance card. 🙂

Time to fill up the calendar again! Thanks for the suggestions. Starting at June 11, we’ll cover Gideon (one of my all time faves, Emmy Jo – how have I not already written about him?)

June 13: Julius. Beyond the orange drink and the Small Paul monkey!
June 14: Madrigal. Because really, there has to be another musical name besides Cadence!
June 15: Simeon. Can it overcome the unfortunate association with homophone Simian? I’m sensing a monkey theme for June.
June 16: Alethea. You’re right about it being a great option for Olivia.
    June 17: Marius. Fascinating choice!
June 18: Ophelia. Natalie, this is such a pretty name – but all I think of is “mad scene” – I wonder if there’s more to think about?

Thanks very kindly for the inspiration, and keep ’em coming!

I’m sure you’ve seen my lists before, but here are some of my favorites for girls:
Belicia — a Mexican form of Elizabeth or Isabel
Moira — I just met a 2-year-old with this name
Susanna — Would you believe it’s not in the top 1000?
Isla — a popular choice in the UK, it hasn’t been in the US top 1000 since 1908
Madrigal — an interesting choice for someone wanting a musical name, and it’s certainly cuter than Madison!
Alethea — Greek for “truth,” it sounds very similar to the top-10 Olivia
Anneliese — a great twist on Ann or Elizabeth for the middle-name slot

    And for boys:
Hadrian — Why not, when Adrian is in the top 100?
Julius — sounds more fresh than the top-100 Julian
    Gideon
Simeon — given the popularity of biblical names, I’m surprised to see this at #926
    Miles
Marius — an appealing choice for Les Miserables fans
Gawain — an earlier form of the top-40 Gavin

Here’s an idea for a topic: names you no longer consider viable for boys because they’ve crossed over to the girls’ side. Taylor, Morgan, and Avery come to mind, and historically Carol, Ashley, and Evelyn.

I’ve used (or planned to use) so many of your boys’ names already, thanks!

As for the girls, there are some lovely thoughts here … funny how many actually intersect with my life, LOL! But let’s fill in some blanks.

May 31 will be Piper (I know a pint-sized Piper); June 2 will be Odessa (I knew an Odessa in high school!); June 4 is Harper (funny how it sounds like it should be a boy’s name, but it’s so obviously feminine) and look for Maeve on June 6. (Again, I know a very small Maeve – it’s a great name.)

I’m actually planning on using much of the list in other posts, too! Cordelia might just be my favorite name of the moment. And I’m working on a Virtue Name list, too – but it feels indulgent to use Verity as a NotD.

BTW, should my baby-to-be be a girl, I’m seriously toying with the idea of using Wren as a second middle name because a) I love it; b) my sister’s nickname is Birdie and it seems fitting to honor her and finally, c) this baby’s godfather is the son of an ornithologist. Really. So Wren is much on my mind … and will appear in another post, soon.

Brilliant ideas – thank you so much!

    Odessa
    Petra
    Gemma
Virtue names -I’ve loved Verity for a long time. It was cool to see someone who actually had the name. It’s so much nicer than boring Hope, Faith, Chastity, etc.
    Cordelia
    Harper
    Piper

    Brynn
    Wren

Let’s see … I’ll delve into the Esme on May 23; Yvaine (from Stardust, right?) on May 25 and Lucia on May 27. Jude will be May 26; and I think I’ll twist Raef and cover Raphael as well on May 28. I’m fascinated by Quil – it’s Gaelic, right? He’s May 30.

Thank you so much! It’s fun to write them, but coming up with a fresh idea can be a job of work. 🙂

Ambrose … I knew a lovely man called Ambrose years ago. And isn’t there a Saint Ambrose? Don’t know a thing about the name, but he’ll be 5/20.

I’m so divided on Poppy! I instantly think of Jamie Oliver’s daughter, Poppy Honey, and – believe it or not – a crooked landlord I had in college. Still, it is rather fashionable these days and deserves some consideration. Poppy is Wednesday!

Clementine– I think it’s about time someone put a lot of thought into analyzing this name. I’ve been hearing it crop up on a lot of name lists and make it’s way to fashionable little ones!

Poppy– Nickname or given name? Charming or silly?

Ambrose– For my own personal satisfaction. 🙂
