AGREEING ON A THIRD BOYโS NAME
Michele writes:
Our third boy is due in early March. As happy as we are for another son, finding a name we can agree on feels impossible.
This baby will join:
- Owen Perry โ We agreed on Owen pretty easily, but it was the only name we agreed on. Perry is a family name for me. I was worried about the initials OP for a while, but I think Iโm over it.
- Theo Andrew โ I had liked Theodore originally. My husband was NOT on board. He really doesnโt like O ending names, and he definitely dislikes old-fashioned names. They sound โheavyโ to him. Iโm not sure how we ever agreed on Theo, but the nurse had been by with the forms at least twice before we were ready. Andrew is my husbandโs name.
Our last name is long and sounds like Car plus Pin plus Ski. I think short names are better. Now that we have two boys with short names with the letter O, Iโve been trying to find more short boy names with the letter O. Hereโs what we have:
- Noah โ Iโve always sort of liked this name. I know itโs supposed to be very popular, but it took me a while to even think of one that we know, so maybe thatโs over/not a thing where we live? Is it too much like Theo and Owen, though?
- Milo, Arlo โ Husband isnโt on board.
- Cole โ My favorite so far, and my husband is kind of on board.
- Jace โ My husbandโs favorite. I donโt really like it, and I donโt think it goes with Owen and Theo. (I guess if he doesnโt like old-fashioned names, I donโt really like new ones.)
Weโre thinking about Joseph for his middle name, because itโs a name on both sides of our family.
Can you help us come up with some other ideas? I feel like weโve looked a lot, but maybe weโre not seeing something?
Please read on for my response and leave your thoughtful suggestions in the comments.
HOW MUCH TO MATCH?
Abby replies:
Congratulations on your third son!
Let me start with a few observations:
- Yes, your older boysโ names match โ quite a bit! But that doesnโt mean your third sonโs name has to continue any sort of a pattern. I know itโs tempting, but the priority should be on finding a name you and your husband love. I wouldnโt necessarily suggest choosing something really different. Owen, Theo, and Algernon or Owen, Theo, and Ignatius is โฆ a BIG switch. But Owen, Theo, and Jace is perfectly fine. They all have short, four-letter names with strong vowel sounds.
- On the other hand, limiting your search to four letter names with an O sound might make sense if it helps you choose. If youโre down to choosing between, say, Sebastian and Cole, using the match as a deciding factor is reasonable.
- Does this child complete your family? Because as tough as it is to find a brother name for Owen and Theo, finding a brother name for Owen, Theo, and Cole is some order of magnitude harder.
On to the name suggestions!
A BROTHER FOR OWEN & THEO
BEAU, BODE
Itโs not the letter O, but itโs a strong O sound! Boden is too close to Owen, but with the strong B sound, I think Beau is just different enough. Bode is another possibility, but Iโm a little uncertain about this spelling. Bodhi and Bodie are both much more popular, but I wonder if theyโre too modern and, of course, theyโre five letters.
HAYES
Except I do think five letters could be great! Hayes feels like a preppier, more polished take on Jace.
JOEL
If youโre willing to drop Joseph as a middle name, Joel offers a strong O sound and four letters and itโs different enough to work with Owen and Theo. No question itโs more on the classic side.
JONAH
While weโre on Joe names, Jonah always comes to mind.
JOSEPH
Or maybe Joseph could be your sonโs first name, especially if itโs a family name on both sides? Call him Joey for short, and itโs a great four-letter O name, too.
KNOX
Not all O sounds are the same, though. Knox is visibly an O name, but itโs a little different. It might be a nice, subtle shift, especially if you imagine there might be a fourth child in your future. Matching the letter O is easier than matching the long O sound.
NATE
Traditional, like Theo. Brisk and friendly, like both of your sonsโ names. And with a strong vowel sound, too. Nate feels like a solid alternative to Jace.
ROME
I think this is a great long O name thatโs, again, different enough from Owen and Theo to work.
Iโm drawn to Knox. Itโs four letters, it includes an O โฆ and yet, it sounds different and distinct from Owen and Theo. Knox Joseph is a great combination. I think itโs just a little different than Cole.
Which reminds me, I do think Cole Joseph is the best choice from your current list.
But I do think your husbandโs suggestion of Jace opens the door to another vowel sound. Would you consider Nate? Like Theo, itโs a friendly, accessible short form of a longer name. It feels more traditional than Jace.
As for repeating letters? Owen, Theo, and Nate means that two of your boys share an O, two share an N, and two share a T. Lots of repeating letters, but itโs not quite as obvious. Plus Joseph has such a strong O sound that the pattern really does hold.
Owen Perry, Theo Andrew, and Nate Joseph would be my pick.
I think Noah is great, if common. (In nyc, there are lots. This isnโt true where I live now, three hours away. ) I love Cole, in theory, but it doesnโt role off the tongue as easily as your sib set.
I have taken into consideration your liking short, possibly an O, possibly four letters, and mix of modern and classic to appease you and your husband.
Short and strong:
I think Max, Gus and Roy work nicely with Owen and Theo. (Plus, Roy has an O!!)
Four letters:
Nate, Jack and Luca all sound great with Owen and Theo. (Like Abby, my brain registered Nate immediately). I also adore Luke.
Letter O:
Ottis would be so sweet with Owen and Theo!! Brody would work as well. And Topher is cool! A modern, preppy twist on a classic much like Theo/Theodore. He would fit perfectly in the band of brothers!
Let us know!! Best of luck.

I love Jonah with the sibset: Owen, Theo, and Jonah. Your husbandโs name was used as a middle name for your last son; maybe your could consider using a variation of your name for this baby. Jonah Michael.
If you are keen on using Joseph as the middle name, then I like Noah. Noah Joseph. I also like Cole and Nate but prefer the 2 syllable first name, 2 syllable middle name pattern you used for your first two.
I think Cole is the winner if you stick to your current list, and I like Abbyโs suggestion of Joel if you want to consider a different middle name. Knox is also a fantastic idea โ Maddox would work in the same way.
George came to mind as a name that contains an O but not the long O sound. It takes the set in a bit of a different direction โ more classic than trendy, but I think it works nicely.
Elliot feels like a brother to Owen and Theo, has an O but doesnโt sound at all matchy. Forrest, too.
Or how about Victor?
One other idea: Nicholas. I know itโs a longer name, but it gives you a little flexibility with either Cole or Nico as nicknames (perhaps both interchangeably).
Knox is a brilliant suggestion!
Itโs as modern as Jace, as historic as Milo, shares the โOโ of his brothers, AND keeps the rest of society from saying, โWait, youโre Owen? No, wait. Theo? No? Otis? Whatever. Itโs something just like that.โ
Knox Joseph sounds dignified but cool.
Congratulations and best wishes!
Many congratulations to you!!
Owen Theo Cole Joseph
Owen Theo Jonah Joseph
Owen Theo Joel Joseph
Owen Theo Rory Joseph
Owen Theo Leon Joseph
Owen Theo Cody Joseph
Owen Theo Ivor Joseph
Owen Theo Jordan Joseph
Owen Theo Lochlan Joseph
Owen Theo Mason Joseph
Owen Theo Nico Joseph
Owen Theo Sonny Joseph
Cole is pretty perfect on your list! Love it.
Echoing a few of Abbyโs suggestionsโฆ
Why not Joseph up front with a nickname you can agree on? Joe, Joey, Joss?
Jonah! Maybe the Jonas brother make it a more modern sound to your husband. It could be a compromise between Jace and Noah, and honour Joseph? Or maybe Jonah Joseph nn Jojo?
Crosby
Brooks
Keaton
Nixon
Great names! Cole is my favorite from your list and Beau from Abbyโs. Instead of Jace, I might suggest Jake or Jack. I know baby twins, Jake and Theo (big brother Liam). Iโll also throw in Troy, Toby, Levi, Luke, Reid, Rory.
Some more ideas:
Hugo Joseph
Eli Joseph
Ansel Joseph
Asa Joseph
Levi Joseph
Asher Joseph
Silas Joseph
Caleb Joseph
Best wishes!!
I think from your current list either Cole or Jace both work really well with Owen and Theo. I think Chase would be a perfect happy medium! All the sounds and playful energy of Jace yet it feels a bit more traditional and preppy like Cole.
Owen, Theo, and Chase Joseph. Perfection
From Abbyโs suggestions, I really like Jonah (if you are ok giving up Joseph as a middle name)
Owen, Theo, and Jonah
