Baby Name of the Day: Morven

May 28, 2010 By appellationmountain Leave a Comment

If Erin and Tara can be names for daughters, why not this poetic place name?

Thanks to Anya for suggesting Morven as Baby Name of the Day.

Some sites will tell you that Morven comes from Irish myth.

From a VERY female Morven I Personally love my name as it is very unique and very Scottish. You probably have to be from the area to be able to pronounce it correctly as Scottish people tend to pronounce our “R’s”and vowels and not forget about them. You are night though Sarah, Morvern probably is easier to say. Interesting discussion!

Morvern is softer and easier to pronounce than Morven. It is my daughter’s middle name and when sandwiched between her first and last names is quite lovely and represents my husband’s Gaelic heritage!

    Thanks for covering Morven, Verity!
I was just looking around and found this name. I thought it was kind of cool how practically no one knows it.
    Thanks again!

It actually makes me think Mordred, which might be why it has a dark feel to me.

Ah yes, that’s why it has a familiar sound to me. It also reminds me of Morgram, the chief werewolf in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

I’ve not heard of Morven before. Not really my kind of name, but it does remind me of Morwenna (I met a couple of them in college). I like that name better.

This name is not aesthetically pleasing. The history is interesting, but the sound is gnarly,

I don’t really like Morven. As the others have said, it sounds too close to Marvin and Melvin and I personally think it sounds very masculine for a girl.

I don’t like the sound of Morven…too close to Marvin, Orville, Marva plus Melvin. [Morgan has had the advantage of being a familiar last name, plus it gained awareness in the 80s through Morgan Brittany (born Suzanne Cupito).]

Tara and Erin have other things going for them. Tara has the advantage of sounding like Cara, Farrah, Sara and at least one pronunciation of Lara. Erin is a sound-alike to Aaron, plus it rhymes with Karen, Darren and others such as Faron.

Morven is just too strange to my ear.

Funny that I really like Marvin on a boy, but this name is really not having any positive sides for me. There’s nothing specific, but it would never land on a possible names list for me.

It’s a fascinating name with an oddly pleasing sound, but I personally wouldn’t use it. Meeting a little Morvern would be grand though.

I kinda like Morven. Its softer and not as harsh as Morgan. I’d never use it, but I do think it is a cool choice.
