Is Marilyn Monroe really an appropriate role model for anyone? I get why she’s an icon, she had legendary beauty. But physical beauty isn’t all that important. I don’t think Marilyn was dumb, but she was emotionally frail. What’s to emulate? I would set my sights for my daughter a little higher if I were her. But whatever, Mariah’s a celebrity, they’re all ga-ga over Marilyn for some unknown reason.
And I agree with everyone else: Moroccan? Really? Why not Manhattan? Although Manhattan Cannon…not that much better. Nevermind.
I had the same reaction. I know Marilyn Monroe is still (justifiably) admired for her beauty, but I’d hardly be inspired by her tragic and unhappy life. It’d be one thing if she overcame those struggles, but she succumbed to them. So I don’t get it.
Still, that’s so mild in comparison to the travesty that is “Moroccan.” What about naming him a Moroccan/ethnic name instead of something so horribly literal??
I like Monroe, although I agree it’s still a little out there. They could also use the nn Moni (bad song associations aside). Moroccan – you’ve all said it. Bleah. At least there are lots of nns – Mo, Roc, Rocco, Mory, etc. And M. Scott Cannon is perfectly boring.
I have the same thoughts on the names as well, and for the same reasons. And the instant reference in Nick’s tweet of Roc and Roe just makes me cringe. I suppose that the rationale for choosing these names is likely much less about the reasons that they mention for selecting Moroccan for the building and Monroe for Marilyn, than the attention, albeit negative. to the “weirdness” factor. Might as well have used Carburator.
Roc Cannon does sound a LOT better than Moroccan Cannon [even though it does sort of smush together into Ra-Cannon], but Roc just brings to mind Dwayne Johnson, the beauty brand, and…well…rocks. Mo/e would be the best choice IMO.
Oh, and this makes me think of Mo Rocca — every single time we see him on television my mom rolls her eyes at his “stupid stage name.” I tell her there’s nothing wrong with it, especially since it’s his real name [first name Maurice], but she doesn’t believe me and says it sounds “so fake.” Maybe it’s because we’re part Moroccan ourselves and she’s touchy? haha
Moroccan is bad, Moroccan Cannon is simply awful. It sounds like they bought a cannon from Morocco, yuck.
And I agree with a lot of the pp, Marilyn would have been much nicer to honor Marilyn Monroe. Well, at least I hadn’t been expecting anything great 🙂
I almost barfed at Moroccan. I agree with a previous poster when they pointed out that you wouldn’t (hopefully) name your child German, Chinese or any other ethnic name. I mean, come on. It doesn’t even sound good, if sound was all you were going for. And as for the place Nick proposed being the Moroccan Room, who cares? I’m glad it’s a good memory for them both, but that doesn’t transpose into good baby name. Morocco might have been a BIT better, but not by much. It still sounds dumb, following right on the coattails of Egypt, Alicia Key’s baby. As for Monroe, first of all, not feminine, second of all, not appealing in sound or looks, and third, she doesn’t have a middle name. Shouldn’t Mariah have figured, I don’t have a middle name, so I’ll do my daughter a favor and give her one? Blech. Just blech to both names.
I think both are absolutely awful, not that I was expecting much better. At least poor Moroccan has Scott to fall back on, though the same can’t be said for Monroe. Monroe was actually one of my guesses for the girl– I’ve seen it on people’s lists recently and I can it see getting huge sometime soon, kind of like Harper or Harlow.
Funnily, enough, I saw a parody celebrity gossip site mockingly suggest Marilyn and Monroe as the twin’s names … they weren’t so far off! Their other suggestion was Mermaid and Mirage.
Really not a fan of Moroccan Cannon! Did they not say the name outloud before they decided on it? I was kind of hoping they’d be really unique and go with classic fave Michael.
With Monroe…really wish they went with the prettier Marilyn if she wanted to honor Marilyn Monroe! And what about Carey for her middle?

Agreed, Moroccan Cannon is terrible. Why not Morocco instead, at least then you could use Rocco as the nickname?
