The baby name Tennille stepped out of a 1970s 8-Track but sounds very at-home in the 21st century.

Thanks to Ariadne for suggesting our Baby Name of the Day.

WHAT DOES THE NAME TENNILLE MEAN?

Like so many surnames, the story behind Tennille wanders and weaves.

In Latin, tenaculum means tong, as in one-half of a pincers or pliers. Tenaille became the equivalent in Old French by the 12th century.

When building a fortress, pincers – tenalia or tenaille – served as an extra fortification. It was a place more easily defended by a small group of soldiers, or a means to stop the enemy before they entered the main castle.

Someone living near such an installation, or the remnants of one, might have taken it as a surname.

A few small towns become known as Tennilles or Tenailles, too.

By the 13th century, it appears as a surname in various records, either directly from a fortress or from a village named accordingly.

By the late 18th century, at least one Tennille family arrived in the United States. Francis Tennille served as an officer in the American Continental Army. Born in Virginia, he moved to Georgia. A small town bears the family’s surname to this day.

HOW DID THE NAME TENNILLE CATCH ON?

Families routinely passed down all sorts of surnames. Common names, like Carter and Hunter and Mason, filtered into general use.

More obscure surnames sometimes all-but-disappeared.

That might have been the case with Tennille. But then along came Cathryn Antoinette Tennille, known as Toni.

The Alabama-born singer moved to California, where she met keyboard player Daryl Dragon. While playing for The Beach Boys, Dragon picked up the nickname “Captain Keyboard” and a captain’s hat to complete the image.

The couple met, married, and began releasing music as the Captain & Tennille. They scored massive, chart-topping hits like “Love Will Keep Us Together” and “Do That To Me One More Time.” From 1976 to 77, the couple even hosted their own television variety show on ABC.

It sounded like the singer’s last name was her first name, a gender neutral possibility that became an overnight sensation.

Up until 1975, the name Tennille failed to appear in the US popularity data. It had never been given to five or more girls or boys in a single year of birth, tracing back to 1880 when data is first reported.

The same applies to spellings like Tenille and Tenile.

And then, in the year 1975, “Love Will Keep Us Together” soared to the top spot on the Billboard charts.

The data speaks for itself:

  • In 1975, 103 girls were named Tennille.
  • By 1976, that number ballooned to 769 births, tipping it into the US popularity charts at a sky-high #300.
  • Also in 1976, 124 girls were named Tenille, along with 11 called Tenile and 10 named Tanille.

It was the perfect name for the moment. It fit with favorite names like Michelle, Danielle, and Nicole.

Still, last names as first names weren’t especially popular during the 1970s, and the recording duo’s career faded as the decade drew to a close.

The name Tennille tumbled out of the US Top 1000 after 1978.

As of 2025, just five girls received the name in the US.

YACHT ROCK MASCOT

And yet, those five girls named Tennille suggest the tiniest of revivals.

Credit goes to yacht rock. And, of course, the genre owes soemthing to Daryl Dragon’s favorite hat. First used as a term in the early 2000s, the genre started to trend in the 2010s.

Cover bands like Yachtley Crew formed. Digital radio offers dedicated stations. HBO even released a documentary in 2024.

If you’re a fan of the genre, a name like Tennille might strike exactly the right note.

1970s REVIVAL

Most names from the 1970s still need a few more decades of hibernation. Stacy and Erin, Brandon and Chad are all adults right about now.

But in many ways, Tennille is a name that never quite caught on. It fits perfectly with our love of surname names for girls fifty years later. File it somewhere between Teagan and Brielle, a name with a contemporary sound that’s tough to pin to a particular decade.

It could be an intriguity rarity, the kind of name that feels vaguely familiar as a surname or throwback from an early decade, with a style that works perfectly for the 2020s.
