This year, the boys’ opening round of the New Names Showdown hit an all-time low – that’s right, LOW, in terms of votes cast.
Was it a fluke?
Or are the names really a bit on the the bold side this time around?
Let’s review the action from last week.

BOYS OPENING ROUND: RESULTS
With nearly 56% of the tally, Hollis defeated Boaz. Because a few people have asked: names are seeded based on their ranking in the US Top 1000. That means it’s a little bit random, which names face off. In this case, Hollis was the #8 seed – it came it at exactly #1000 in 2023. That means, of course, that Boaz was the top pick. And so let’s call this a bit of an upset.
Commanding over 59% of the votes, Kenai swept past Ulises. That’s not a blow-out, by any means, but it’s a solid win for the Brother Bear name.
Foster garnered nearly 63% of the total to defeat Wren. I think we’ll be hearing more of both names in the future, but I’m quietly happy to see Foster advance. I’ve been expecting this name to catch on, and now, maybe it finally is!
In the biggest (only) trouncing of the Opening Round, True crushed Veer, earning over 77% of the haul. While Veer has potential, straight-up word name True is an emerging style star.
The four winning names advance, and now it’s your turn to vote again!
I didn’t see the opening round for boys (though I did see it for girls)! Not sure why, but maybe others missed it, as well?
Oh I wonder if something did go wrong? Hmmm …
Also – thank you. Technical difficulties hadn’t occurred to me, and that’s a lot better an explanation than the names just being unappealing!!
