The baby name Summer brings warmth and energy.

Thanks to Andrea for suggesting our Baby Name of the Day.

WHAT DOES THE NAME SUMMER MEAN?

Summer is a word first, of course.

It comes from the Old English sumor, the word for the season. Similar words exist in many European languages going back centuries.

Speaking of back in the day, we once counted our age by how many summers had passed. A summer’s day has meant a long day since sometime in the 14th century, probably first as a nod to the solstice.

Speaking of midsummer, long before it was a scary horror movie starring Florence Pugh, it was celebrated with festivities. Just like in the movie, these customs go back centuries.

And summer has been strongly associated with leisure and vacation for years, too. We’ve been summering – as a verb – since the 15th century. Summer camp has existed since the late 19th century. Nat King Cole scored a hit with “Those Lazy-Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer” in 1963, but it was actually a translation of an earlier German song.

SUMMER AS A SURNAME

Summer, Summers, Sommer, and Sommers along with other variations occur as last names first. They’re not always references to the season, though in some cases, that’s possible.

Just like any last name, that means we can find a tiny number of people with the name Summer over the ages.

But when did the baby name Summer first catch on as a given name?

WHEN DID SUMMER BECOME A BABY NAME?

Call Summer one of the first hippie-influenced nature picks to break into the mainstream.

It debuted in the US Top 1000 in 1971.

Credit for Summer’s 1970s surge likely goes to Miss USA 1975, Summer Bartholomew. She was born Robin Summer Bartholomew, back in 1951.

Since then, the name has climbed. The baby name Summer has ranked in or near the US Top 200 every year since 1993.

Rachel Bilson and Zooey Deschanel have played characters by the name. Christina Aguilera named her daughter Summer.

It’s become a staple for a generation, and the name is still going strong.

FAMOUS WOMEN NAMED SUMMER

During the 1970s, Three’s Company became a hit sitcom. The premise is unthinkable in the 2020s, but back then, two women and their male roommate had all sorts of adventures in Santa Monica, California. Suzanne Somers played Chrissy Snow. The actress remained in the public eye for decades. It’s not exactly the baby name Summer, but it tied the sound to the moment.

Swimmer Summer Sanders won gold at the 1992 Olympics, and has since served as a commentator.

Fiction has given us so many more. Characters on Baywatch, Napoleon Dynamite, School of Rock, and The O.C. helped raise the name’s profile. The Zooey Deschanel character mentioned earlier was from 500 Days of Summer. The indie rom-com with hints of drama became a breakout hit of 2009.

In terms of popularity, the baby name Summer ranked #174 in 2025. That’s roughly where it has charted since the early 1990s. It’s very seldom used for boys, too, and has been heard in small numbers for girls as far back as the 1950s.

It was ahead of the trends at first: an -R nature name for a girl with a tailored, surname-esque presence. Now it fits right in with Harper and Violet.

While Summer seems complete and nickname-proof, it’s possible to imagine nicknames like Sunny working, too. Given our love of sun names, like Solana and Soleil, it’s possible the sunshiny aspect of the name will boost it even farther.

SUNSHINE AND WARMTH

The baby name Summer feels casual and warm. But it’s also a well-established choice, no longer perceived as too different. Instead, Summer fits with 21st mainstays for a daughter. Summer is a sister for Brielle; an alternative to Sloane or Sage.

This could be the perfect name for parents who love all things associated with the season. It’s not too different, but remains modern and memorable.
