WHAT DOES THE NAME JOLENE MEAN?
Like many a given name, Jolene is a product of parents’ creativity. It pairs:
- Enduring Jo, sometimes a feminine equivalent of Joe in English, short for Josephine and Joanna and more.
- Names ending with -lene and -leen, from former favorites like Arlene, Darleen, and Charlene to new arrivals like Jaslene and Kayleen.
It’s hard to pin down a specific Jolene name meaning as a result. Joseph means “to increase” from a Hebrew root; the -lene ending is a popular choice in English and other European languages. Sometimes it create a feminine name from a masculine one, like Charlene from Charles. But it’s tough to extract meaning from the sound.
But the song that made the name famous adds a layer of meaning – possibly unwanted.
DOLLY PARTON’S JOLENE
American country music icon Dolly Parton recorded her smash hit song “Jolene” in 1973.
She’d had hits before, but this was the first song to gain traction in the UK, and helped propel her to superstar status in the 1970s and 1980s.
It’s the story of a woman begging the other woman to “not take her man.” That makes Jolene a femme fatale, a homewrecker, a Jezebel. Insert your preferred insult here.
The singer has remarked that the title was inspired by an encounter with a 10-year-old fan. Or maybe not. At other times, she’s referenced a red-headed woman who flirted with Dolly’s husband.
Either way, the song has endured. The list of artists who have covered “Jolene” include The White Stripes, Reba McEntire, Olivia Newton-John, and 10,000 Maniacs.
In 2024, Beyoncé took on “Jolene” on her country-inspired album Cowboy Carter. Instead of pleading, the singer is warning the other woman. Also noteworthy: Dolly herself cameos on the album, giving the fresh, confident update her seal of approval.
OTHER THAN THE SONG
Here’s the thing about the baby name Jolene.
It was used well before Dolly recorded a single note. After all, she heard it on a real-life girl – probably.
But none have ever left the same impression – before or since. You might think of:
- Manga series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures includes a character named Jolyne Cujoh. The series focuses on the Joestar family, all of whom have Jo- names, from familiar Jonathan to surprising Jotaro and invented JoJolion. Every character can use the same short form, JoJo.
- The extended Mario universe includes a character by the name. (She’s the manager of the Glitz Pit in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and part of the mystery in the story.)
- On a very different note, author EL Doctorow’s short story “Jolene: A Life” was first published in 2002 in The New Yorker magazine. It’s a sad, tragic tale of a woman who encounters problem after problem. In a 2008 film adaptation, Jessica Chastain played the title role.
- The Office gave us Joleen Bennett – called Jo, and played by Kathy Bates, in the later seasons. She’s the CEO of the company that buys Dunder Mifflin.
HOW POPULAR IS THE NAME JOLENE?
The baby name Jolene debuted in United States popularity data way back in 1918, when seven girls received the name.
It wasn’t exactly a unique sound for the era: Josephine and Irene both ranked in the Top 25, and ends-with-lene names abounded.
By the late 1950s and early 1960s, Jolene hit peak usage, as part of two names clusters: Jolene, Maryjo, Joanne, plus Marlene, Kathleen, Coleen, Eileen, Darlene, Earlene, and so on.
Then came the song. By 1974, Jolene soared to #245. In 1975, it stood at #248.
But after 1993, it fell out of use. The baby name Jolene returned in 2010, hit #450 in 2019, and stands at #666 as of 2025.
Is that the end of the story for Jolene? Maybe … but maybe not.
SPARKY WESTERN-TINGED TRADITIONAL
Some might imagine Dolly’s enduring song would taint the name Jolene. The opposite has happened. It’s made Jolene feel almost traditional – an established name with a heavy dose of country, a sister for Lainey or Daisy, a name in the key of Clementine or Juniper.
