If you’ve reviewed the Top 20 Boys’ Names of the Day, you might recall that it was a mix of names that are, indeed, rising in use for our sons and those that are probably mere curiosities.
The girls’ list tends more towards the wearable, but there are a few surprises.
Fretting that Finn has become too popular? Still looking for an authentic Celtic choice that wears well in the US?
Thanks to Corinne for suggesting one that would fit the bill. Our Name of the Day is Fergus.
Quick – when’s the last time you met a Eupehmia? How ’bout an Oighrig?
Thanks to Photoquilty for suggesting the related Effie as Name of the Day.

The official Social Security Administration list won’t be out until May, but unofficial lists have been circulating since mid-December.
Here at AppMtn, I can’t possibly claim that the most popular posts will be reflected in the Top Ten – or even Top 100 – baby names in use. Many of the names I write about are obscure. And with that little mystery, I’m signing off for the holiday. Merry Christmas to all!
Would you name your daughter after a Bond girl?
Thanks to Shelby for suggesting this seasonally appropriate choice. Our Name of the Day is Vesper.
Just in time to give Bandit a run for her money as most unfortunately named child of 2009, Johnny Knoxville has welcomed a son called Rocko. (Hat tip to the LA Times.)
What a difference a K makes. Rocco seems stylish. But Rocko? Is an animated, stressed-out wallaby on Nickolodeon.
I loved him as Luke Duke, and no, I wasn’t expecting a guy who made his name getting tasered on MTV to go with something classic like Philip. (Which, BTW, is Knoxville’s real first name.) But still …
