Wishing a joyful Father’s Day to all celebrating.
And if Father’s Day is hard for, lifting you up, too. (Did I start this morning teary-eyed over the coffee maker? Yes, yes, I did.)
But I do want to share one thing I think of often at this time of year, because it was inspired by a Father Figure in my life: Steve’s Principle. It’s bedrock to being a decent human being, and while it’s about names, it’s also about so much more.
Elsewhere Online
Television is more influential than movies when it comes to pop culture names, and children’s television can be surprisingly powerful. Why? Because it’s background noise that we’re all watching, all the time, at a certain point in our lives, hearing their character names repeated again and again. Which is how Paw Patrol names end up trending. I loved Nancy’s look at the data on Miles, because it turns out that Sesame Street gets credit for at least some of that handsome name’s popularity.
Congrats to Colleen Slagen on the upcoming publication of Naming Bebe! Just released on June 10th. I love seeing all this online content become an actual, physical, old school book we can hold in our hands, don’t you?
Do you have a human name or a dog name? This is fun. But also? There’s really no line between human and dog names anymore. I mean … as a recent convert to Dog Person status, I feel like I’m very happy for my kid to share his name with a Good Boy. Also, my daughter has a long-established cat name, so I suppose I was always willing to share.
Updating & Thinking About
I cannot wait to see Disney Pixar’s Elio, for so many reasons, and I fully expect the name Elio to follow fellow Pixar characters like Remy, Arlo, and Luca up the popularity charts. (Actually, it already is.) I’ll add the Production Babies summary as soon as possible.
Artist surname name Matisse leans more masculine now than ever before. Credit to Top Ten Mateo, traditional Matthew, and trending Matias/Mathias/Matthias. Artist surname names are one trendlet that’s never quite happened, but I feel like the potential is there.
Doveva is one of the rarest names I’ve ever featured, but I think it has potential.
