Sunday Summary 9.10.23Congrats to Coco Gauff on her US Open Victory!

The question on my mind: will Coco rise in the name popularity rankings?

Football and basketball stars frequently influence baby names. But both sports feel a little different. Fans follow those sports steadily, across an entire season. It’s easy to imagine a couple expecting a baby in Boston circa 2004 or so. They would’ve heard Brady – as in Tom – everywhere. For months and months as they mulled over names for their new arrival. Of course it caught on!

Tennis centers on a handful of big tournaments. Unless you’re a fan, Americans probably hear mostly about the US Open, and maybe Wimbledon, with the French and Australian Opens receiving much less attention. So it’s more episodic, and shorter in duration.

Still, Coco feels like a promising choice, with that vibrant O ending. 90 girls received the name in 2022. Here’s guessing that we’ll see at least a small uptick in the next year or two – possibly more if Coco’s career continues to flourish.

Speaking on names that might – or might not – catch on, Laura Wattenberg breaks down Barbara and Barbie. The article is worth reading for the PS alone.

Have I shared this Facebook reel before? I love the idea of choosing your grandma name. My mom definitely announced her preference when I was expecting my first. (As it happened, one of my sister’s kids came along later and called her something completely different … and it stuck!)

I’ve met a handful of couples who agreed to let one parent name the first child and the other parent name the second. In many cases, it works just fine … but it can also go horribly wrong. Here’s hoping this couple found a decent compromise.

Wow! What do you think of Riot Rose? Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are already parents to son RZA Athelston Mayers. Riot Rose Mayers was born in August. Rumor has it that Rose refers to dad’s love of flowers. It’s impossible to say if that’s true, but I’m surprised that I really like this name anyhow. Dad’s real name is Rakim Mayers, so it’s a family of R names.

This is a SUPER crazy old school page, but the lists of French Creole names are gorgeous. Pelagie, Zulime, Barthelmy, Theodule, and on and on.

That’s all for this week. As always, thank you for reading – and have a great week!
