Tori Spelling is now a mom to three! Daughter Hattie Margaret joins big sister Stella Doreen and big brother Liam Aaron, as well as Dean’s son, Jack.

I would never have guessed this one for the reality television couple, but it fits – Jack, Liam, Stella, and Hattie. She’s also on trend with names like Sadie, as well as the British tendency to elevate short forms to formal name status.

I’m a big fan of Harriet, and I think she’s catching on, along with other ends-in-et options like Juliet. Hattie is also the name of one of the newborns profiled in 2010 documentary Babies.

Spelling and McDermott had been choosing names that followed trends. This time I think the couple may be setting them.

  1. I like Hattie Margaret. I would have gone with Harriet but heh Im okay with their choice. I prefer the other baby name news from today. Spencer Grammer’s new son Emmett Emmanual.

  2. Yea, never would have guessed this, but Hattie Margaret McDermott is pretty nice! Liam, Stella, and Hattie (and Jack, yes). Surprisingly, on the People announcement of Hattie’s birth, so many people were saying the name is awful and mean and just plain terrible – I was shocked. Yes, Hattie is very vintage, but it no more vintage than Hazel! This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of this one in Hollywood – Rachel Bilson (The O.C. and now Hart of Dixie) has a little sister named Hattie – and it doesn’t really feel out of place, but it doesn’t feel quite like Tori Spelling, either.

Do I like that it’s a nickname? Eh, it’s alright. Stella isn’t a nickname, but she could be (Estella), and maybe Liam isn’t always considered a nickname, but he could be (William) – Hattie is a nickname, but considering her siblings’ names, it’s not crazy for her to be a formal name. I guess, if I knew they were going with a nickname name, I would’ve put my money on Maisie Harriet instead of Hattie Margaret… 🙂

  3. It’s a really good choice by celebrity standards, but I can’t help thinking it’s too nicknamey, especially compared to Stella. I’m not personally a fan of Hattie (or Harriet) anyway. But I love Margaret! And I definitely agree, I can see it becoming if not trendy, much more widely used after Maddie, Addie, and Haddie.

  4. Damn it Tori!!! Hattie (or actually Harriett) is one of the few names we agree on and now it will become trendy. 🙁

Hattie Margaret is lovely, I just have sour grapes.

  5. Very on-trend, but I would prefer it as a nickname. It makes me think of one of my favorite books as a child — Hattie and the Wild Waves, by Barbara Cooney.

  6. Congrats to the family! I would love to see Harriet and Hattie rise again, and hopefully this will help!

  7. Hattie is ok; I do like the hipster retro feel of Hattie Margaret. To me, Hattie feels like a natural evolution of Addie, Maddie, and Mattie. Congrats to the family!

  8. Love it!!! I agree .. totally a trend setting name. I fell in love with this name again when it was featured on Despicable Me.. Miss Hatties Home for Girls. Of course Miss Hattie was a nasty woman, but her name was lovely. The writers of the movie really went for it with the names.. Hattie, Margot, Edith, Agnes and Gru. Great Job Tori!

  9. I really like the name Hattie as a stand alone, which was helped by the fact that I know one in her late teens. Just Hattie, not Harriet.

    1. I hope it’s not a spoiler to mention that Adam and Christina’s new baby on Parenthood is Nora. I think Hattie, Max, and Nora make a really great sibset and seem like realistic and of-the-times names for a couple like Adam and Christina.
