WHAT ARE PRODUCTION BABIES?

Ever since the very first Pixar movie, Toy Story, debuted in 1995, the studio has followed a fascinating tradition. Disney adopted the tradition, as did plenty of other animation studios over time.

They’ve listed the names of any babies born to the staff responsible for the movie in that film’s credits.

Those names appear at the very end, under the heading Production Babies. Because, well, these babies arrived during the movie’s creation.

After all, animated movies take a long time – sometimes years – to go from early concept to finished product. And the team involved with the process is big, big enough to guarantee at least a few new arrivals. If your family grows while you’re focused on a movie, well, inevitably you’ll think of Frozen 2 or Turning Red as part of those memories.

Obviously, Snow White didn’t have a list of Production Babies.

So it’s a new(ish) phenomenon, but still widespread.

Despite sharing the names, the end credits aren’t exactly birth announcements. They don’t share gender, date – or even year – of birth, or the parent’s role on the film. A handful of lists might note twins. Occasionally, if two Production Babies share a first name, the initial of their surname (presumably) is also included.

It’s nicely egalitarian, too. It doesn’t matter if the production baby’s parent was the A-list celebrity or the junior accountant, their names appear in alphabetical order.

Past commenters have confirmed that parents decide how their children’s names appear. A name listed as Ellie, for example, might be short for something, or not – but we only know what the parents choose to share.

But that really doesn’t take away from the sheer delight of getting a peek at the creative teams behind our favorite films choose for their new arrivals.

ABOUT THE ZOOTOPIA 2 PRODUCTION BABIES NAMES

CLASSICS AND CURRENT FAVORITES

Most of the Zootopia 2 Production Babies list consists of traditional or current names, the kind you’d hear on any playground right now.

Those include popular classics like Benjamin, Claire, Eleanor, and Grace.

Current favorites including Autumn, Avery, Cole, Finely, Finn, Lydia, Max, Oliver, Riley, Rowan, and Xander.

NATURE NAMES

Nature names are still going strong, with familiar River and Juniper, as well as bold Wolf, appearing on the list of Zootopia 2 production babies.

RISING CHOICES

As befits a creative powerhouse, many of the names on the list are just slightly ahead of the trends.

Elaborate Aviana and spirited Cleo sound right at home on this list.

A MIX OF BOLD BOY NAMES

The range of names we use for our sons continues to expand. This list includes Niko, Quinton, Radford, Shia, and Wally – surname style, cuddly nicknames, borrowed from famous actors, and more.

SHORT AND SWEET

Traditional and vintage, Hope and June share a short, sweet style that’s very at-home in the 21st century.

DOUBLING UP

Three of the Zootopia 2 production babies listed a first-middle name: Kal Xander, Lennon Rose, and Maricel Amelia.

That’s new – it’s pretty rare for parents to list more than a first. But perhaps as time goes by, making sure that you know the Zootopia 2 credits are a shout-out to your Lennon, not your colleague’s Lennon, will encourage the listing of more middles?

A FRENCH CONNECTION

A quartet of gently French names for girls makes the list: Celine, Elise, Elodie, and Marceline. There’s no specific connection to France or a French-speaking country in the credits, so this might just be a trendlet to watch. (Then again, some French girls’ names are almost always trending.)

INTERNATIONALLY KNOWN

As ever, the diverse teams that bring animated films to life means international names are represented. This list includes the Japanese Chiyoko, Italian Gaetano, and Korean Tae-Oh.
