THE PERFECT PAIR WITH PEARL

Eden writes:

Our daughter, Pearl Louise, is turning four and is so excited to be a big sister. Sheโ€™s been dreaming up names for โ€œherโ€ baby for weeks, and as sweet as it is, itโ€™s reminding me that we donโ€™t have a girlโ€™s name picked out.

Pearl is convinced sheโ€™s getting a sister, and every name she suggests is long. Isabella, Waverly, Liliana. Theyโ€™re all the names of girls she/we know, so I understand where sheโ€™s getting them from. But we want another name like Pearl. Short, not popular, the kind of name that everyone knows how spell, that maybe we have to repeat sometimes but mostly people understand. I love the way people will comment things like, โ€œOh, that was my great-auntโ€™s name.โ€

We chose the name mostly because our last name is hyphenated and long. Itโ€™s like Henkins-Jamilton. Not really that hard, but it doesnโ€™t roll off the tongue.

Weโ€™re still pretty set on Rowan or Jude if itโ€™s a boy.

If itโ€™s a girl, we could really use some ideas.

Hereโ€™s what we have already ruled out:

  • Mae, Lee/Leigh, Jane, Rose โ€“ Theyโ€™re just too short/common.
  • Faith, Hope โ€“ Weโ€™re not religious. We know Hope isnโ€™t always religious, but for various reasons, it feels that way to us.
  • Blue, True, Skye, Star โ€“ These are the kinds of names that we keep coming up with, more things! But thereโ€™s no way weโ€™d ever do this, and since Pearlโ€™s name is a thing, matching them so much feels a little weird, maybe, too?

I think weโ€™ve been stuck in this letโ€™s-find-the-craziest-names and text them to each other place, which is not helpful. (Though who knows? Maybe we should name this baby Chai. Or Choir!)

Can you help us find some short, normal names that are still interesting and pretty in case Pearl is getting a sister?

Please read on for my response and leave your thoughtful suggestions in the comments.

NAMING A SISTER FOR PEARL

Abby replies:

Congratulations on your second!

And congrats to Pearl on her promotion.

Letโ€™s start with a few general thoughts about a name that will match Pearl. (Because no, itโ€™s probably not Choir!)

  • I agree that short makes sense. If Jude and Rowan are your boy names, then Iโ€™m going to assume a girlโ€™s name could also be one or two syllables.
  • Weโ€™re looking for a known name. Jude, Rowan, Pearl โ€ฆ all names that are immediately recognizable.
  • It sounds like weโ€™re avoiding nouns. For every family who loves the idea of naming their kids Pearl and Jasper, thereโ€™s another that finds Pearl and Rose too coordinated. I imagine you might change your mind for the absolutely right name, but for now, Iโ€™m going to avoid suggesting names that are also familiar nouns.
  • Vintage versus modern โ€ฆ Pearl strikes me as beautifully antique, Rowan as fresh and modern, and Jude falls somewhere in between. We often have different styles for boysโ€™ names and girlsโ€™ names, and thatโ€™s fine. But Iโ€™m imagining that we might want something more on the old-fashioned side for a daughter.
  • One question to ponder: Does this child complete your family? I ask because Iโ€™m tempted to play off the sounds in Rowan and Jude. Like Rose and June โ€“ though maybe not, because of the noun thing. But if you want to save one or both of those names for a possible future son, then Iโ€™d want to avoid those sounds.

Okay, on to the names!

A SISTER FOR PEARL

ADA/IDA

Ida leapt out at me as a name from the same era as Pearl. (Circa 1900, Ida and Pearl both appeared in the US Top 50.) But I wonder if itโ€™s too different? Equally antique Ada works every bit as well. Itโ€™s a little more familiar, and offers pioneering Ada Lovelace as a namesake.

BETTY

I love the idea of an ends-with-Y (or IE) name to go with Pearl. And Betty? Is one of the best options that weโ€™re just not using right now. Itโ€™s old school โ€“ think Betty White โ€“ but itโ€™s also a name in Taylor Swift lyrics. (Thatโ€™s down to Ryan Reynolds and Blake Livelyโ€™s daughter โ€“ all three of their older kids have been name-checked in a song.) I think Betty is ready for revival, and just like Ida, itโ€™s a popular name from the turn of an earlier century.

FRANCES

Classic, lady-like Frances is a name that blends strength and femininity โ€“ just like Pearl.

HELEN

In ancient literature, Helenโ€™s face launched a million ships. Today we hear it as a strong, capable kind of name, a logical sister for Pearl.

JEANNE

My very first thought: Jeanne. Originally a French feminine form of John, via Jean, Jeanne had a good run in the US from the 1920s into the 50s. Today itโ€™s nearly forgotten, a grandma name if not a great-grandma one. But itโ€™s kind of perfect, too. As sleek as Sloane, but with a sweetly vintage appeal, too. I also like the way itโ€™s a little bit longer, balancing out Pearl when theyโ€™re written together.

MAUDE

We love Audrey and Maeve, so why not Maude? An older form of Matilda, Maude has been used in English for over a millennia. Itโ€™s immediately recognizable, but seldom used now โ€“ a perfect opportunity.

RUTH

Sometimes Biblical names sound religious. Think Nehemiah or Priscilla. Others, though, have filtered into use in a way that makes them bigger than their origins. Iโ€™d say thatโ€™s true for Ruth. Maybe thatโ€™s because it does have a second origin โ€“ an Old English word meaning compassion โ€“ or maybe itโ€™s because it has such a storied, fascinating past. (Babe Ruth. Baby Ruth! The Notorious RBG.) I think itโ€™s very much a sister for Pearl, and unlike Ida or Jeanne, Ruth remains in use now.

WINNIE

Along the lines of Betty, I wonder if names like Winnie would appeal? Vintage diminutives โ€“ think Sadie and Millie โ€“ are big, but I particularly like Winnie as a sister for Pearl.

Overall, Iโ€™m still stuck on Jeanne โ€“ the first name that came to mind, and one thatโ€™s so rare today. But it would almost certainly rule out using Jude in the future and maybe itโ€™s too different? I think Ruth is the obvious sister name if youโ€™d like something a little more familiar, but with all the best qualities of Pearl, too.

So maybe โ€ฆ Jeanne Elise or Ruth Adele or Ruth Marie?

Readers, over to you! If this baby is a girl, what would you name a sister for Pearl Louise?

  1. My favorite from Abbyโ€™s list is Ada. I also think Pearl and Jude are great! From the comments, Greta is a fun idea as it means Pearl. My suggestions are Pearl and Olive, Isla, Mara, Lane, Quinn, Maren, Joan, Blythe, Vera, or Tess. I also love many of these with your name! Congrats!

  2. Pearl, being a word name, evokes a pretty image. What sounds do you find beautiful? I wonder if that might help you to get out of the rut of just finding more word names. For example, Iโ€™ve found that I find the sounds of Ls and Ms to be really pretty. I also like lots of vowels.

Some names that give a similar vibe as Pearl that I personally find pretty (and also short, and normal, but interesting):
    Willa
    Mabel
    Mira
    Faye
    Flora
    Vera
    Lena
    Elise
    Esme
    Della
    Irene

  3. Ruth from Abbyโ€™s list and Blythe from the comments seem perfect to me. I also think that Hope wonโ€™t be perceived as too religious, and I really like it with Pearl. Other thoughts:
    Alba
    Bess/Bessie
    Birdie
    Cleo/Clea
    Della
Edith/Edie (Maybe a cute nod to you?)
    Elva
    Frida
    Goldie
    Hilda
    Iris
    Leda
    Lula
    Mabel
    Martha
    Minnie/Minna
    Nancy
    Olive
Polly (Polly and Pearl might be a bit matchy though)
    Sybil
    Sylvie
    Tess
    Tilly/Tilda

    1. Oh, and I forgot: Judith! If you like Jude for a boy, maybe Judith will appeal for a girl? I like Jude as a nickname, but Judy or Judith in full works great, too.

  4. I absolutely adore your daughterโ€™s name. And this is where I get to suggest my two fave underused names โ€“ Maude and Kit! So glad to see Maude on Abbyโ€™s list. If you need to envision it working on a kid, look up the show โ€˜Inbestigators.โ€™ And Kit, well I think itโ€™s THE spunkiest name, one Iโ€™d love to have myself and could totally see as a sister to Pearl.

I was thinking Minnieโ€ฆ totally darling. However, then I googled and I realize itโ€™s been chosen as a sister for Pearl for not one but TWO celebs. Sooo maybe this nudges it over into yes, or maybe firmly no, for you.

I feel like Pearl is going to be HOT soon. Those celeb kid Pearls will be coming into the spotlight within the next five years or so. Plus, doesnโ€™t Pearl work on that however many decades back trend? So I think youโ€™re looking for something most people would definitely pause to hear on a baby this year, but yes, familiar enough and fits in but stands out.

    Zuzu
    Mimi
    Dolly
    Cass

Mavis is a great suggestion by โ€˜Aโ€™! Yes please. And Joyce is intriguing from Dee. Lois would be a hit, if Pearlโ€™s mn wasnโ€™t Louise. Actually ENID would be amazing, if only your name wasnโ€™t Eden (or maybe youโ€™d love that tie-in to your name??)

Cannot wait to see this update!

  5. Anne, Bea, Beth, Blythe, Claire, Dale, Delia, Elle, Esme, Faye, Flora, Frances, Ione, Jane, Jeanne, Joan, Kate, Lena, Maura, Moira, Myra, Nan, Nell, Rosa, Thea, Una

  6. Here are some more girl names that could work, I think:

    Faye
    Calla
    Vera
    Clover
    Coral
    Dove
    Lilac
    Fleur
    Io
    Mira
    Minna
    Oona
    Astra
    Alba
    Alma

Of these, I think I like Faye best because it is also one syllable and not common, but not out there either.

    Best wishes!!

  7. Thea
    Etta
    Fern
    Ida
    Jill
    Inez
    Lois
    Irene

I really do like Pearl and Irene, both feel like understated elegance.

  8. Congrats on your second little one!

From Abbyโ€™s suggestions, I really like Ruth but would it rule out Rowan or Jude for you if you plan on a third? (Also, Rowan and Pearl are so darling together!) I think Ada and Helen work really nice with Pearl as well.

Some other names with a โ€œthatโ€™s my great auntโ€™s name!โ€ vibe:

Edith or Eveโ€ฆ But too close to your own name?

Greta! Pearl and Greta! This feels like a very sparky and fun sister set.

June or Joyโ€ฆ(if you are ok with letting go of Jude for a potential third baby) June and Pearl. Joy and Pearl! I would be delighted to meet a little June or Joy.

    Evelynโ€ฆ Pearl and Evelyn!

Aliceโ€ฆ Pearl and Alice. Alice is a perfect sweet spot name and totally feels like a sister to Pearl

And my wildcard suggestion because it checks all your boxes and I so badly want this name to make a comeback: Mavis. I would absolutely die if I met a little Mavis. It has that long A sounds and sharp V sound like so many other popular names right now (Avery, Ava, Violet, Olivia), I feel like it should be popular again! Pearl and Mavis! Talk about a fun and punchy sister set!

    1. I am totally sold on Mavis!

(Also loving Jeanne!, Ruth, Mabel, Helen, Irene.

One more idea, how about Mary? There was a Mary in our preschool class and the name was so sweet on a little kid.)

  9. Congratulations!!
    Margaret meaning pearl
Could be a sweet connection to have. Maggie, Meggie, Meg NN for this.
    Beryl
    Edith
    Slyvia
    Joan
    Emerald
    Alice
Queenie (My great aunty was a actually named, not a nickname.)
    Violet
    Joyce
    Gladys
    Lois
    Gloria
    Florence
    Clara
    Sally
    Lucille
These are others that came to mind that seem to flow well with Pearl and your surname.
I hope everything goes well for you.

  10. Congratulations on baby number 2!
My first thought was Cora. Pearl and Cora sound sweet together. Is that name too popular?
Other sweet names that are around the same popularity as Pearl:
    Veda
    Gwen
Even more rare, but in theme with Pearl: Beryl
A little more popular but Iโ€™ve never heard a baby named these recently:
    Amy
    Heidi
    Phoebe
I really like Abbyโ€™s suggestion of Ruth. It means โ€˜friendโ€™ -maybe appropriate for a little sister. Pearl and Ruth
Enjoy the hunt for the best name!
