March Madness: Boys’ Update

Football_Referee

Referee by Avinash Kunnath via Flickr

As some of you have noticed, the Boys’ Semi-Finals have been riddled with controversy.  It’s due to pure human error on my part – somehow, I jotted down the wrong winner in a Quarter-Finals match:  Nathaniel won, but I advanced Tobias to the next round.

I’ve been puzzling over what to do ever since Patricia alerted me to the problem.

The two obvious possibilities are:

  1. Retract the original poll and issue a new one, pitting Archer against Nathaniel, as it should have been, even if it means that occasional visitors’ original votes are discarded;
  2. Continue as is, with Tobias remaining in the Semi-Finals.  After all, referees make bad calls in sports all the time, and once the game is done, well … the game is done.

The first case requires rejecting hundreds of votes already cast, while the second scenario shortchanges fans of Nathaniel.

But then I thought of a third option, and it is the one I’m going to take.

While basketball is, necessarily, limited to two teams, March Madness Baby Names is not bound by court size.  So I’m going to let both the Semi-Final polls continue as they are, but the Boys’ Finals will have three, rather than two, contestants: the winner of Archer v. Tobias, the winner of Finn v. Cian, and Nathaniel.

It’s an imperfect solution – the perfect solution is, of course, a souped-up DeLorean and a healthy supply of plutonium.

My apologies for the confusion, and thank you for your patience.  March Madness has been great fun for me, and I hope one bad call by the ref doesn’t put you off the idea entirely!

The Boys’ Finals will post around 1:00 AM my time on Saturday morning, and I do hope you’ll come back and vote for your favorite of three!

Baby Name of the Day: Greil

You might find this name on the pages of Rolling Stone or The Village Voice.  How would it look on your child’s birth certificate?

Thanks to Janelle for suggesting Greil as our Baby Name of the Day.

Here’s my absolute favorite thing to get in my email inbox: birth announcements.  There were two last week, complete with pictures!  I really, truly appreciate them and won’t pass them on unless you expressly note that I can share them here.  Thank you!

Speaking of birth announcements, I was scrolling through a random list and found a bunch of interesting ones: Bellarose, Amelka, Zella, Nico, Jamerson.  No, that’s not a typo.  (I checked twice!)  With ends-in-er names catching on and hoop star Jimmer Fredette inspiring parents, what could catch on next?  Brenner, maybe?

In other news:

  • Here’s a look ahead at next week’s Names of the Day: Marlon, Circe, Greil, Humphrey, Emrys;
  • And a look back, too – in 2009, Barnaby was featured.  In 2010, it was Hera;
  • Names currently suggested for Alyssa Milano’s son include Destry, Gaston, Kenai, Jax, Darrell, Javier, Kennedy, Vittorio, Emmitt, Maddox, and Colt.  My pick for them would be Dante – Italian, to go with Mr. Alyssa Milano’s surname, Bugliari, but still quite current.
  • Amethyst: a possible successor to Ruby?
  • Loved this post at Nameberry on Israeli Baby Names.  I was surprised at the long list of unisex names.  The author, Hannah of A Mother in Israel, was kind enough to answer my question.  Apparently there’s not any controversy over using a gender neutral name, though “many parents prefer a name associated with one gender.”  Interesting;
  • Move over Jason and Mason!  ForReal spotted a newborn Tason;
  • BabyNameWizard asks if Justin will remain forever young;
  • Via Nomes e mais nomes post on the Grand Ducal family of Luxembourg: there’s an Imre in this generation, plus one of the princes married a commoner called Tessy.  She’s now Princess Tessy;
  • Is she a baby or a weather prediction?  For Real also spotted a Rainy May.

It was a quiet week for names in the news, but we did welcome Sage Ann and Kellan Clay, twins for news anchors Kyra Phillips and John Roberts.

Funny, because I’d recently asked on my Facebook page if Sage was more suited for a girl or a boy.

In other celeb baby Wipeout co-host John Henson welcomed a son, Jackson Wright.

Tomorrow at Nameberry: Rock’n'Roll baby names inspired by the recent additions to Rock Hall.

As always, thanks for reading and have a great week!

March Madness: Girls’ Semi-Finals

Silver Basketball

The boys’ Quarter Finals were all close, with no one name winning by a landslide.

The girls were a different story.  Louisa beat Ophelia handily, 67% to 33%.  And Elodie bested Lorelei by a comfortable margin of 20%.

Still, you can’t quite call any of those runaway victories.  I have my guesses as to which name will walk away with the trophy on the boys’ side, but the girls’ victor?  I haven’t got a clue.

Get us one step closer by voting!

It’s the Final Four!

A few of my favorites have been knocked out.  (Au revoir, Huxley!)  But some of the matches were just impossible – at least for me.  I’m sad to see Dashiell fall, but Archer is great, too.

For the boys, there were no upsets in the last round.  But then, neither were there any close calls.  All four matches had a clear victor.

Something tells me that this will make the next round really agonizing … ready?

It’s the battle of the new, hot ending: the -er of Archer versus the ends-in-s of Tobias

It’s a Celtic match-up: Finn versus Cian

Sarah is a sensible name, worn by the perpetual good girl, found in enduring young adult novels .  But the Biblical original started out as a far more glamorous appellation.

Thanks to Heather for suggesting the shimmering Sarai as our Baby Name of the Day.
