Celine Dion’s newborn sons finally have names. But I wouldn’t have guessed this duo in a month of Sundays! Apparently, big brother Réne-Charles liked the idea of “American” names for the boys.

According to People, Eddy honors Eddy Marnay, who produced Dion’s first five records, and Nelson honors Nelson Mandela.

No word on middle names, and Eddy appears to be Eddy, not Edward.

I keep thinking of Nelson Eddy, the singer who made the leap to Hollywood in the 1930s and 40s. I’m guessing the happy couple isn’t big on MGM’s Golden Age.

  1. I was excited to hear the news and hear the explanation too. 🙂

Not names I would have expected either. Nelson makes me think of the bully character on The Simpsons. Eddy is a little too ‘nicknamey’ for my personal taste too.

    1. I do appreciate the explanations … you’re absolutely right, so often we don’t get them. They really are a treat – from celeb parents, or really from ANY parents. I love the stories behind names.

  2. I too though “Nelson Eddie” right off the bat which seemed odd to me with brother Rene – Charles (which is sooo handsome)!

I can secretly wish Eddy were Edward, Edgar, Edmund or anything Ed- related in full but I do firmly like Nelson. He’s geeky cool enough for me. And Nelson Mandela is an awesome namesake.

I too like it when celebrities explain their choices.

  3. I was a little taken back when I saw their names. I expected something else, something French, but I love it when celebrity couples explain their choices. 🙂
