Do you have your Halloween costumes ready to go? Over the years, my daughter dressed up as lots of Clio/Cleo characters, as well as Mavis (from Hotel Transylvania), Minnie Mouse, Peter Pan, and Redd the Pirate. This year, she’s a Derry Girl – though more of just another classmate, not specifically Michelle, Clare, Erin, Orla, or James.
Does your kid’s name inspire a Halloween costume? Or is your child going as a character with a great name? There are so, so many to choose from. (And I’ll be on the look out for more next Friday. Guessing there will be at least one Wednesday.)
ELSEWHERE ONLINE
I know a name story is BIG when friends who have no interest in the topic start texting me things like: who is Nara Smith and did she really name her baby Fawnie Golden? Here’s what I share back: she and husband Lucky also considered Dainty, Denim, and Ribbon.
Nine out of ten of the top dog names are also top names for little humans. That reflects how much we value our pets, of course. But it also reflects a preference for casual choices for our children. Daisy rather than Margaret, Charlie over Charles.
Hortense, Marie-Amelie, Eugenie – all French royal names in the spotlight thanks to the Louvre heist. I mean … the story really has it all, including so many stunning names. (Are we supposed to care about the jewels? Maybe, but it’s the names for me.)
UPDATING & THINKING ABOUT
Tanith combines a dark, maybe-true, maybe-slanderous history with an intriguing sound. It’s midway between, say Theodora and Allison, but far more rare.
Unity ought be an intriguing virtue name boosted by the initial U (for unusual!) … but instead, it’s about the Hitler-adjacent Mitford sister. Every time I think their story is in the past, pop culture revives the six scandalous sisters for a fresh look. (I haven’t seen Outrageous, but it’s on my to-watch list.)
Harrison just happened to be the name I updated before meeting up with an old friend – who shared that she’d recently stayed in the same hotel as Harrison Ford. How cool is that?!
That’s all for this week. As always, thank you for reading – and have a great week!
