The baby name Kenai debuted in the US Top 1000 in 2023, and could climb higher still.
Thank to Alana for suggesting our Baby Name of the Day.
WHAT DOES THE NAME KENAI MEAN?
The baby name Kenai means “flat lands” in the Dena’ina language.
The Dena’ina people have lived in Alaska for well over 1,000 years. Their trails are part of the historic Iditarod Trail across the state. It’s a place name in Alaska, but not traditionally used as a given name.
KENAI, ALASKA
The city of Kenai takes its name from the Dena’ina word. It’s southwest of Anchorage, a relatively small town best known for salmon fishing.
It’s located on the Kenai Peninsula, near the Kenai River. Shortly after the Alaska Purchase, the US Army establsihed Fort Kenay, though it didn’t last long. In 1960, the city was formally incorporated with its present name.
Kenai Fjords National Park is also located on the peninsula, knowing for its icefield, glaciers, fjords, and islands. While there is a road, much of the park is only acessbile by hiking, boat, or plane. The park is home to all sorts of wildlife, including bears, moose, and whales.
All of this makes for a rugged, appealing image. Key dates in the development of the park might have inspired parents, from the 1978 designation of the park onward.
But the data doesn’t really show that. Instead, we turn to pop culture to transform the Alaska location into a modern baby name.
DISNEY’S BROTHER BEAR
In 2003, Disney gave the world Brother Bear.
Set at time when sabre-toothed tigers and mammoths still roam the Earth, the movie begins with three brothers. Sitka is the eldest, followed by Denahi, and then Kenai, the youngest. They believe the Great Spirits create all living things.
When Kenai kills a bear in anger, he’s transfomred into a bear as punishment.
He’s sent off to atone for his actions and sets off on an adventure. He meets lots of other wildlife, including a bear cub named Koda.
A complicating factor: Denahi doesn’t understand that his brother is the bear. Instead, he’s tracking the bear, beliving it killed Kenai.
Kenai and Koda set off together on their quest, meeting more bears along the way. Drama follows, but ultimately, there’s a Disney-worthy ending.
Brother Bear earned an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. A direct-to-video sequel followed.
Joaquin Phoenix voiced Kenai.
KAI and MORE -AI ENDING NAMES
The Disney connection could be enough to launch the baby name Kenai. But there’s another factor.
Way back in 1979, the baby name Kai entered the US Top 1000. While it most clearly has Hawaiian roots, and means “sea,” Kai is a truly international choice. A mini name, it shares something with casual nicknames like Kit and Cal, but it’s also complete.
By the 1990s, Kai was climbing. It’s ranked in the Top 100 most popular names for boys in the US since 2020.
The baby name Kai has also part of a wave of vowel-ending choices for our sons, from Old Testament names like Levi and Elijah to romance language imports like Mateo and Luca.
Names ending with AI are a relatively recent arrival, but the baby name Kenai fits right in.
HOW POPULAR IS THE NAME KENAI?
In fact, Kenai debuted in the US popularity data way back in 1992, when it was given to five boys. That’s a decade-plus before Brother Bear’s release.
But the name remained on the fringes. It wasn’t until the movie that the baby name Kenai gained in use. In 2003, nine boys received the name. By 2004, that number rose to 52.
It has some potential as a gender-neutral name, just like Kai. It debuted in the girls’ data in the year 2000, with seven births.
In 2023, the name cracked the US Top 1000 for the first time. As of 2024, the baby name Kenai ranks #772 for boys. That’s an all-time popularity high.
The name was also given to five girls.
