Are you a long-time reader, but never commented? Is there a name you’ve been dying to suggest for ages, but fear that I’ll scoff? Reject the suggestion, you, and your every idea about names? Ignore your email forever? (Okay, that last one might actually happen, but I’m working on it.)
Here’s your chance.
The week of September 10 is reserved for requests from those who have never, ever, ever commented before.
Here’s how it works:
1. Leave a comment on this post with one name suggestion.
2. I’ll take the first four names that:
Have not been previously been covered here. Aren’t so crazy close to a previously covered name that there’s little new to say. Have enough history of use to create a story. Is not already on the calendar in the upcoming months.3. It is unlikely that the first four names posted will fit these criteria, so don’t be discouraged if you are post #10.
4. No worries if you’re suggesting a super-common name or a wildly unusual one. All are welcome.
How will I know if you’re a lurker? Easy. Your comment will be held for moderation, as all first-time comments are. I suppose you could invent a fake identity and game the system, but I’d prefer that you don’t go to extraordinary lengths to fake us all out. Just use the contact form in the top right corner of the site to request a name.
Ready, set, go – and I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I’d like to suggest:
Eniko – a Hungarian girls’ name
Sonseray – possibly a unisex name of Turkish origin?
Vashti – a Biblical girls’ name
Sasson – Hebrew?
Quitterie – a French girls’ name
Inari – a girls’ (or unisex?) name with both Finnish and Japanese origins
Sunday – word name
Hi! I think I might go back to lurking…and you have lots of names to be going on with…but I’ll still add some of my favourites that I don’t think have been profiled here.
Boys: Alberic, Sholto, Wulfstan/Wulfran/Wulfric
Girls: Aphra, Clemency, Sunniva, Thora
Hey, I’m definitely a lurker. I love the history you find on these names.
I would like to suggest:
Esther- one of my favorite biblical classics.
Fabiola/ Fabiana- names I picked up from the Olympics that I thought were pretty.
Liriel- don’t know if this is legit, but would love to know more about it.
Oriana- a frilly dawn name that I think gets overlooked.
Rosalba- I would like to know more about the usage of this name.
Obadiah- another biblical name that I love.
Israel- started off as a name, but now a country. Is it still usable?
Alphonse- purely FMA related love.
Hezekiah- one of my top favorite boy names.
Nicodemus- would like to know its history of use.
Osric
How about the name Potter? In my family tree it started as my great-grandmother’s maiden name. It was then bestowed as a middle name for my grandfather, father and brother. I think it could be a rather fetching first name as well!
I’m SO a lurker. I’ve commented once on an old post, so that doesn’t really count, right? 😉 A couple suggestions from our name list…
-Alessandra… My name was changed from Alexandra right before I was born. Now my younger brother bears Alexander as a middle name. I thought Allie or Aless/Ales/Allis (Alice) would be cute nn’s.
-Lily… There are a couple Lili-ish names on your NotD list already, but what about pure and simple Lily?
-Esther… I love the Biblical Esther. One of my favorites.
-Lawrence/Laurence… Switching to boys (sort of), I love the classic and masculine feel of Lawrence, and the charming nn of Lars. I knew a French girl growing up named Laurence so that spelling has always felt feminine to me.
-Jonathan or Jonas… Again with the Bible names, Jonathan is sweet. Jonas, not even sure that it’s one of my favorites but wondering where Jonas originated from.
-Lincoln… My favorite president. The only Lincoln’s I know are adults.
-Oren… It keeps coming back to us.
-Sparrow… Sad that this was used by a celeb, I hope it isn’t picked up too much by others. This has been on our name list for years. My hubby and I slyly said to each other, we could name a boy Jonathan Sparrow and call him Jack… A momentary lapse of judgement? I’m crazy enough to do it.
-Blackbird… On the birdy note, with all the Ava’s flitting around these days, could Blackbird be used as semi-sensible girl’s name? I like it.
And finally…
-River… As in River Phoenix. Awesome.
Thanks!!
Mildred, please!
I don’t remember if I’ve ever commented here or not, but here goes.
I’d love to see Percival covered!
How about Micah.
I noticed your reserved week of september 10th falls near my mother’s birthday so I’d like to nominate her name:
Marcy
Hi! This post prompted me to search the archives for three of my current favorite boy names to make sure I wouldn’t suggest any repeats, and it turns out you have already covered them – Callum, Tarquin, and Cassius! However, it looks like the archived post on Tarquin has been cut short – perhaps if you get some time you can try to re-post the whole entry? Thanks for such a wonderful name website!
