Note:  I’d originally agreed to write about Keziah today, for Racheli.  Except when I finishing up the post, I realized it sounded eerily familiar.  Sure enough, that was because Keziah was Baby Name of the Day back in the day.  Oops, and Racheli, my apologies!

She made waves as the adopted name of a big screen mermaid.

Our Baby Name of the Day is the much-maligned Madison.

Number 3

Number 3 by Phil Parker via Flickr

First, a long overdue congratulations to Carolyn on the birth of Nolan Curtis, a little brother for Meredith.  Wishing you joy!

Second, I’m on Twitter.  Let’s be clear: I haven’t got a clue what I’m doing on Twitter.  If you’d like to follow me while I flail, please do.  I’m @appmtn.

Elsewhere online:

  • Thanks to British American for directing me to a thread where I found the following sibset: Aurora Dawn and Rain Storm. Only they decided Rain didn’t suit daughter #2, so she was rechristend Gwenyvere Rain.  I like Aurora and Guinevere, and even with the daffy respelling, it is a huge improvement;
  • WeeDecor’s Winter list is out. I’m intrigued by Caffrey from the boys’ list, and I’m delighted to see Liv.  Is it me, or is Emmelyn/Emmalyn/Emmeline going to be the next stealth hit;
  • Trafton?  I despair.  But other names spotted by ForReal in Pennsylvania fill me with joy: Tressa Jade, Ivy Wren, Bianca Florentina.  Then there’s Henry Swarm – let’s hope that’s a maiden name passed down after much conversation, and not a sci fi reference I’m missing;
  • There’s a great list of recent additions to the British line of succession up at Mer de Nomes.  Queen Cosima sounds lovely, doesn’t it?
  • Nancy delves into variants of the name Unique, which isn’t terribly unusual at all but makes me think of the pink-spotted Backyardigan UniquaSui Generis, on the other hand, would be a stand-out, though you’d be confused for just plain Sue;
  • Speaking of Sioux, For Real spotted a Gabriella Sioux.  Are the parents from Idaho?  Fans of Siouxie Sioux?  I wonder;
  • There’s a new book out called Bring Back Beatrice! It is a sound concept, but I think the author misses a few things.  First, she describes it as “a clarion call to break away from the pack when choosing a name.”  Great advice.  Trouble is, lots of people like Beatrice.  And Cora.  And Daphne.  It’s probably a decent sourebook if you want to be ahead of the next trend, but falls short of offering truly timeless advice.

In celebrity news:

  • Supermodel mama Eva Herzigova welcomed her second son, Philip, a little brother for George.  I think that’s the kind of slightly off-trend sibset that defies fashion;
  • 30 Rock’sElizabeth Banks welcomed a son, Felix;
  • Okay, Posh named her pooch Luna, so they’re stumped for a girl’s name.  Yawn.  I cannot believe for second that a couple who came up with Brooklyn, Romeo, and Cruz, won’t come up with an inventive name for a girl;
  • Now that Mariah’s due date is approaching fast, I’m paying more attention to suggested names for the twins.  Somehow I think they’re likely to disappoint.

Last week’s post for Nameberry was Power Girl Baby Names; tomorrow’s post is inspired by one of the names on that list – thanks to RachelMarie for the inspiration!

That’s all for this week.  As always, thank you for reading!

Baby Name of the Day: Colette

She’s saintly, literary, and on trend.  Best of all, she’s been out of the US rankings for three decades.

Colette is a special Saturday Name of the Day for expectant mom Laura.

Emmett is big for boys.  Rhys, Reese, and Reece are on the rise for both genders.

Here’s an obscure option that combines the best of both.  Thanks to Shelby for suggesting Emrys as our Baby Name of the Day.

After many an inquiry and a few nudges, it’s official: Appellation Mountain is now on Facebook.  There’s zero content, but should you stumble across the page, yup, it is the real deal.

Now, on to the name news!

Did anyone catch the baby name reference in Wednesday night’s Cougar Town?  I can’t find a link to back it up, but I’m certain Jules told her therapist she’d already picked out a name for the baby she and relatively new boyfriend Grayson are (hypothetically, theoretically) going to adopt: Arthur.

I also had an awful name nerd moment. A newly pregnant colleague of mine asked me about the most popular baby names of the moment.  As I rattled off Ava as a solid member of the Top Ten, her jaw dropped.  Yup, she thought she’d discovered the uncommon Ava.  I hate doing that to people, but then, I’d also hate to find out that my rare gem was shared by three other babies in the maternity ward, so I’m hoping she forgives me.

Just one starbaby note this week:

If you have a Baby Name of the Day request pending, my apologies for taking longer than usual (and I’m usually not quick to begin with) to respond.  Because I rely on a good ol’ fashioned dayplanner to schedule posts, I usually try not to go more than two months in advance.  But I’ve almost filled up December 2010, and I’m debating how to manage the growth in name suggestions.

Well, that, and I have yet to buy a 2011 dayplanner, so I can’t go into January even if I want to.

As always, I’m grateful for each and every idea submitted.  I would’ve stopped writing after three weeks if I had to keep thinking up names on my own.

Have a great week!

Sunday Summary: 9/5/10

For those of you in the US, hope you’re having a happy Labor Day weekend!  There won’t be a Name of the Day post tomorrow, but there is something else headed your way.

Fall brings with it the return of network television, which means lots of new character names to consider.  Hellcats – heavily advertised in the Mall at Annapolis – will feature a Marti, plus fellow cheerleaders Dan, Lewis, Savannah, and Alice.  Marti reminds me of Marni, Kristin Bell’s charater in upcoming chick flick You Again.  I wonder if Marti/Marni will catch on, along with Sadie and company?

Speaking of the Mall, in about three weeks the good people at Pottery Barn are going to deliver a piece of furniture to me.  His name is EmmettA post I wrote way back in early ’08 was all about the names Pottery Barn gives to their product line. Who names their rugs and desks and bookshelves?  It must be an interesting job, and should there ever be a need, I think we could crowd source names for consoles and side tables right here!

Which brings us to the news of the week:

In starbaby news:

And remember, if you want to submit a Reader Baby Name Story? Now is a great time!

That’s all for now – thanks for reading, and I’ll see you soon!

Reader Baby Name Story: Beatrix and Juniper

When I posted Jodi’s stories about naming big sisters Pippa and Romilly, I intentionally didn’t divulge the names of her two other darling daughters.  Readers, the suspense is over!  The most charming quartet of girls answers to Pippa, Romilly, Beatrix and Juniper!  Read on for more, including their lovely middles.

Sunday Summary: 3/14/10

First, please join me in wishing a fond au revoir to Bewildertrix!  With baby #3 on the way, she has decided to put Onomastitrix on hiatus.  (See?  That’s me feeling hopeful that she’ll be back someday.  Because no one does a round-up of BAs like Bewildertrix.)  She promises she’ll be around and will definitely come back and share her good news when baby makes five.

In local news, remember back when I mentioned my friend was in labor?  And hadn’t told me the gender or the name?  I spoke blogged too soon.  A few hours later, she was back at home, still pregnant.  More than a week (!) later, her darling daughter Caroline arrived.  The baby is beautiful, mom, dad and big brother Zachary are all doing well and Clio has someone to boss around right on her block – someday.  And the name!  What a great name.  (The middle is a distinctive family choice shared with her brother, so I won’t share.)

Elsewhere online:

In starbaby news, via E! Online and Celebrity Baby Blog:

  • Her name is Billie Beatrice – yup, the daughter of Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart has a name and it combines the boyish-nickname trend with the antique revival trend for an unexpected, but sweet choice;
  • Joseph Fiennes and wife have welcomed a daughter. Everyone is doing well, but as for a name?  They’re not telling;
  • This popped up at Perez Hilton, but I understand the original poll was on BabyCenter – apparently BC readers voted Sarah Michelle Gellar’s choice for her daughter’s name – Charlotte Grace – the very best of the best, followed by Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck’s Seraphina.

That’s all for this week.  As always, thanks for reading!
