Jasmine, Ariel and Aurora have all been popular picks for girls. And Belle is quite the sensation. So why is this fairytale princess name off limits?
Thanks to Photoquilty for suggesting Cinderella as Name of the Day.

He’s an ancient king of Ireland and a modern American novelist.

Here’s an often-overlooked gem – feminine but not fussy, aristocratic yet easy for a child to wear.
Thanks to Lola, Kate and Jodi for suggesting Philippa as Name of the Day.
During yesterday’s discussion of Habakkuk, Bek came up with the clever idea of using the nickname Huck. While I still don’t think we’ll be meeting many boys answering to that Biblical appellation any time soon, it got me thinking about Huck.
Huckleberry is nearly as outrageous as Habakkuk. But what about Huxley? It’s the surname of Aldous Huxley, author of Brave New World. He’s the best known of a family with a long history of scientific and literary achievements. (He also happens to share my birthday.)
And so I’m opening up Huxley for Yea or Nay. Please vote!
And if you hadn’t checked back, Kohl stands at a 73% nay.
Once upon a time, Biblical boys’ names like Isaac, Elijah and even Noah were seldom heard. Today, our Sunday schools are packed with little prophets.
And yet, this one probably remains way too obscure for wearing. Thanks to Bek for suggesting Habakkuk as Name of the Day.
She may be the most often requested name here at AppMtn and she’s top of the reader favorite lists at Nameberry.
Thanks to JNE, Photoquilty and the lovely Elisabeth of You Can’t Call It “It” for suggesting Beatrix as Name of the Day.
First, an update – if you haven’t checked back on the poll results for Which Cora Boy Name is Your Favorite? , I’ll spare you the mouse click. Thatcher has it, hands down, with 73% of the vote. Nash comes in second, with 17%. Most surprising, IMHO, Caje and Zoran both picked up 5% each.

Speaking of greatness, the new Danish prince is set to be baptized later today. Dad is Prince Joachim. He has two sons from his first marriage – Nikolai and Felix. The new prince is Joachim’s first with second wife Marie. Royal watchers are betting on Albert for the baby’s name. Tradition dictates that the baby’s name is not revealed ’til the baptism, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Leah has become a modern staple for girls. Leo is white hot for boys. Mix them together and what do you get?
Thanks to Alicia for suggesting Leora as Name of the Day.
I’m not a huge tennis fan. I knew that Roger Federer and wife Mikra were in the family way. But I wasn’t watching anxiously for news of the blessed event.
Except.
Roger and Mirka have welcomed twin daughters. And their names? Charlene Riva and Myla Rose.
Myla fits in just right with all the Mayas and Mias and Kylas out there. As it happens, there’s a pint-sized Mylah in my ‘hood.
But Charlene? Knock me over with a feather! Is it a logical extension of the Charlotte/Charlie craze, or signs of the New Retro in baby names?
And is it me, or is the pair a little bit mismatched?
Thoughts?
Every once in a while, I agree to research a name that I know not a thing about. And then, a few hours later I think “why didn’t I realize that before?”
But in this case? I did my research. I wrote the post. And I’m still not sure I’ve landed on the explanation behind today’s choice.
Thanks to Photoquilty for suggesting our Name of the Day: Marsann.
