February Name Narrow Down

Vote Vote VoteThe big winners from last week’s poll were Artemisia and Pimm.  (Technically, Meredith beat out Pimm by a handful of votes, but someone was kind enough to point out that Meredith has already been covered here.)  They’ll be featured on January 31 and February 1.

This week’s poll takes us right into the heart of February 2012.  I’ll follow last week’s approach, putting all of the names into one poll, and selecting the top two to cover.

Baby Name of the Day: Henson

Henry and Hudson are both popular picks for boys.  How about this surname with ties to a creative visionary?

Thanks to Aubrey for suggesting Henson as our Baby Name of the Day.

Fetching Names: Getting to Coco

Coco (musical)

Some names are forever linked to a diminutive form.  We expect Katherine to answer to Kate.  If you’re introduced to Joe, you’ll assume Joseph appears on his birth certificate.

Those aren’t the only options, of course.  Katherine could just as easily prefer the feline Kit, and Joe could be short for Giacomo or Joachim.  Or they could be just plain ol’ Joe and Kit.

But what about names that don’t feel quite substantial enough to write on the birth certificate, but aren’t clearly connected to any given name?

Here’s one that suffers from that challenge: what’s to be done about Coco?

He’s a color name, a surname name, and a very popular choice.

Thanks to Kelly for suggesting Blake as our Baby Name of the Day.

Rerun: Rhys

A few of you have mentioned that with a world of names to profile, it isn’t terribly satifsfying to see re-runs.

I agree.  There are always rafts of names that I’m dying to dive into, and I’m always tempted to move forward.  Editing is not my favorite task.

Except then I read my posts from 2008 and realize that editing?  Is something I’ve gotten MUCH better at with practice.

So here’s one of the very first posts from May 2008, all rebooted with fascinating data that has my mind spinning.  Please go here to read and comment on Baby Name of the Day: Rhys.

I had this really elaborate introduction planned, but I realized it had become a separate post.

So with very little prelude, here’s what caught my eye this week:

  • British Baby Names’ post on Red Names includes two of my favorites – Rufus and Garnet.
  • Isadora’s post is making me rethink Calliope.  I never truly appreciated her before!
  • Love the combo Greta Reece.
  • Nancy profiled Aquinnah, a name scarcely heard of before Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan welcomed a daughter called Aquinnah in 1995.  She fits right in with girls called Quinn today.
  • Speaking of Quinn, I can’t wait to hear what these parents choose for their twin daughters.  They’ve told Swistle that one baby’s name will definitely be Avalon, and they hope to use Quinn in the middle spot.  It’s not too late to add your opinion!
  • Elke, Lorna, Clea - Australian fashion designers’ names are tremendously stylish.
  • It takes me way too long to chose nail polish colors, only because I need to read every color.  Eponymia’s post on Zoya colors is perfection – and so true!
  • Speaking of truth, I love this NameLady post on nicknames versus formal names.
  • Ever wondered how to say “twentieth child” in Dutch?  Check out Voornamelijk’s Twintigste kind voor de Duugar family.
  • Need more names?  Here’s a new blog on the scene: Boheminames.  Start with her post on Tree Names.  No, I don’t think you should name your child Saguaro – but what an intriguing idea!

That’s it for this week.  As always, thanks for reading – and please stop by Nameberry tomorrow, for one of my favorite lists ever!

Name Narrow Down Continues: Jan/Feb 12 Edition

Vote Vote VoteRui pointed something out on the AppMtn Facebook page.  The virtue of the polls is that they’re surfacing names that more people want to read about, and that’s generally a good thing.  And, of course, they’re absolutely necessary because otherwise?  I’d be scheduled into 2014 by now.

But they do tend to push the content to the center.  Not that I never write about popular, even common names.  I’ve covered Madison and Ava and James.  But would a wacky pick like Habakkuk ever make it through again?

This might not fix the problem, but for this week’s poll, I’m putting all the names in together regardless of gender, and I plan to blog about the top two.  You can still only vote once – and we’ll see what happens.  I might also try grouping names differently in the future, by level of obscurity rather than more obvious criteria.

So with that out of the way, please vote!

Editor’s note: Thanks to Sarah A. for pointing out the obvious – I’ve already written about Meredith!  Oops.  So the two top will still win, but if Meredith ranks in the top two, I’ll take the next one down the list.  But I’ll bring back Meredith as a rerun post either way, so she still wins.

Fetching Names: Joyful J Names

The family of Jim Bob Duggar.

I cannot resist.

Even after Dorcas posted her list yesterday, I still feel compelled to weigh in.

The Duggar family is expecting baby #20, which means they’ll need another J name.  If you haven’t been following the mega-family since they had their first television special in 2004, the story of the names goes something like this:

They liked the name Joshua James for their first son.  Then along came twins, Jana Marie and John-David.  They didn’t want future kids to feel left out, so they figured they’d stick with J names, never dreaming they’d have so many kids.

The rest of the Duggar siblings are Jill Michelle, Jessa Lauren, Jinger Nicole, Joseph Garrett, Josiah Matthew, Joy-Anna, Jedidiah Robert, Jeremiah Robert, Jason Michael, James Andrew, Justin Samuel, Jackson Levi, Johannah Faith, Jennifer Danielle, Jordyn-Grace Makiya, and Josie Brooklyn.

Thanks to nouveau coinages like Jayden and Jaylon and Jaymee, J gets a bad rap, ranking right up there with the kreativ K.  But there are plenty of J names that are stylish, wearable, and in some cases, completely unexpected.

No telling what the Duggar family will go with, but here are a few J names that anyone might consider. Continue reading
