I’m not sure exactly what’s going on upstairs as I write – I can hear both children laughing, and the Dora Halloween special is definitely on television. My husband must be in the room with them, but I kind of think the toddler is in charge.
Beyond describing my background noise, I say that because I’ve often wondered if the name Dora will catch on years from now. I doubt that many parents named their daughters in honor of Olivia Newton-John, but having spent their formative years singing along to Grease, is it really a surprise that they later embraced the name? Sometimes a public figure just raises awareness of a name, subtly adding it to the menu of possible options.
Then again, I’ve yet to meet a little Ernie, and we all grew up with Sesame Street. So I’m not certain we’ll all have granddaughters named Dora.
On to the name news:
In celeb news:
That’s all for this week, but if you’re starved for Sunday Summary-esque commentary the other six days of the week, you can find me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/AppMtn. It’s a great place to post names that you’ve spotted elsewhere – I’m starting to keep an informal list in the discussions area.
As always, thanks for reading!
She’s an elaborate throwback, an Italiano nature name with a surprising literary backstory.
Thanks to Alta for suggesting Ornella as Baby Name of the Day.
He’s cousin to Dora and the best friend animals have had since Dr. Doolittle.
Thanks to Urban Angel for suggesting Diego as Baby Name of the Day.
I’ve heard she’s considered old-fashioned overseas, but she has an interesting indie edge in the US.
Thanks to Bek for suggesting Hannelore as Baby Name of the Day.
If you’ve reviewed the Top 20 Boys’ Names of the Day, you might recall that it was a mix of names that are, indeed, rising in use for our sons and those that are probably mere curiosities.
The girls’ list tends more towards the wearable, but there are a few surprises.
I can’t tell if you can tell, dear reader, but I’ve been crazed lately. Because yesterday? Was the first-ever Benefit Consignment sale for my kids’ school. Which I chaired. And which was, if I do say so myself, quite the success. I’ve been neglecting the housekeeping here at AppMtn, for which you have my sincerest regrets. (But seriously, I could NOT sell one more candy bar.) And it’s a great school, so it was worth every minute of sorting gently-worn 2T tees.
The sale did make me think of something – you’d REALLY better like your kids’ names, because at some point, you will almost certainly introduce yourself as “Jackson’s mom, Ellen,” or be greeted as “you must be Ivy’s mom!” In some small way, your kids’ names become your name, too.
While I was otherwise engaged, it was a weighty week in the Baby Names ‘verse:
Perhaps the most intriguing thing was his “Juan and Juanita” construction. Wonder if he’s aware it is a nod towards the Nameberry duo’s Jennifer and Jason?
On a lighter note:
Lights, cameras, babies:
I’ll be catching up with Names of the Day and all sorts of things in the next week or two – but tune in tomorrow for Zane. And, as always, thanks for reading!
If you love the name Ava, you’re not alone. Nearly than 50,000 parents have chosen Ava for their daughters since 2005.
And what’s not to love? It’s simple, it’s glamorous, it’s feminine without being frilly. Ava pairs well with a variety of last names, too.
But now that it is well installed in the Top Ten, plenty of parents are looking for an alternative to naming their daughter Ava, too. Read on for a few ideas.
