Happy Sunday! As you read this, I’ll be waking up in the woods.
Things I never anticipated when I first held my newborn daughter: she’d grow up to truly love camping. My husband shares her enthusiasm, so they’ve been before. But me? Never. Not a once.
But this weekend I’m off to a state park with her scout troop. Wish me luck! I’ll be back to all things onomastic – and running water and reliable wifi – soon! And who knows? Maybe I’ll come back with a post about fall-inspired nature names.
In the meantime:
- This family really did name their daughter after Colonel Sanders! Welcome to the world, Harland Rose. I know some people find this … bananas? Unthinkable? Mercenary? But I don’t know. In our age of Harper and Harlow, Harland sounds like a reasonable choice for a daughter. (I feel like there’s a blogger with a daughter named Harlan, but I’m blanking on details …) But is $11,000 reasonable compensation for giving up your naming rights? Or does it feel too much like stadiums? FedEx Field lacks the romance of, say, Joe Louis Arena.
- I’m always intrigued by accidental patterns. Do they have to name their next baby something that ends with an ‘o,’ to match Theo + Milo? I agree with Swistle – they can, but have to? No. There are lots of ways to find a great name for their next baby.
- While we’re visiting Swistle, do you remember this question about using difficult family surnames as middles? Worth a re-read.
- Hillary Duff and Matthew Koma named their new daughter Banks Violet Bair. (Bair is dad’s real surname; Koma is a stage name. Which seems obvious to me now, but I had to look up when I first read it.) This one garnered some strong opinions. Banks gives me a very Mary Poppins vibe. But will her nickname be Banksy? Hmmm ….
- Fun fact: while Banksy is not really used as a personal name most places in the US, there was at least one born in Iowa.
- Shakespeare didn’t actually create the names Imogen and Olivia! Time to revise this post.
- I’ve always thought Iskander had potential …

I actually really like Harlan(d) for a boy or a girl! I hadn’t thought about it much until the KFC contest was announced, but I think it’s on-trend and cute.
The I have a cousin Harlan, a boy, but I can see it for a girl, too. Banks is very Mary Poppins to me, very surname !! Be interesting to know what her parents call her on a daily basis!!
