Sunday Summary: 3.21.21Don’t you love to discover a phrase we all need? It happened the other day:

Flutter Names

The incomparable Swistle mentioned the phrase “Flutter Names” in this post.

Flutter names are the ones that thrill us. They might be names we’re very much considering for our child’s first name. Maybe they’re a little more daring, bold middle names we need to convince ourselves would wear well. Or maybe they’re so far out there that we’ll probably never choose them … but that doesn’t stop us from loving the idea that the name exists.

For me, Flutter Names are often unexpected combinations – like the nickname Nate from Ignatius, or Fin from Josephine. My daughter’s name is Very Fluttery on paper. But as a Swistle reader pointed out, every name become a Flutter Name once it’s attached to your beloved child.

This British Baby Names post about bohemian-arty girl names is packed with Flutter-worthy choices. I’m especially drawn to Briar and Romilly from the post, but there are so many possibilities.

A good reminder that even a truly unique name … probably isn’t. Or, how Quadree and Qadree ended up on the same football team.

We all know that vowel sounds are big in baby names right now, but whoa! This data from Namerology is eye-opening. Another way to think about it: names like Leo and Zion, Alaia and Naomi have more in common than you might guess …

Swooning over pretty much every name on this list, from Annelore to Verily.

Just for fun … ever wondered what they call Donald Duck’s nephews in other languages? Now’s your chance to find out. Found via the always diverting Scoop.it page Name News, curated by the delightful – and eagle-eyed! – Clare.

  1. Flutter names is a lovely phrase! Romilly’s one of mine, actually. I think my Flutter requirements are- I find the name beautiful, quite unusual, it suits a baby, old lady and all the stages in between and has a good meaning, or at least not bad.
