The big news of the week? Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have welcomed daughter number two. But they still haven’t revealed her name! If you haven’t voted, check out the Nameberry blog contest.

In other news:

  • Clio started spending a few hours at our church’s childcare center this week. Among her classmates? Mabel, Ida and Adrian.
  • CBS Chief Foreign Affairs Correspondent Lara Logan’s new son is here. The name caught my eye because he’s Joseph Washington V. The fifth! And you though there was pressure to pass down your husband’s name. 🙂
  • With just nine days to the inauguration, life inside the Beltway is getting interesting. If you didn’t read them back in November, check out stories about new babies named Barack and Obama here, here and here. Michelle, Sasha and Malia have all inspired namesakes, too.
  • I’m not quite sure what to say about Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa’s new son’s name – Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa. Nakoa apparently means warrior in Hawaiian; Namakaeha is passed down from Dad. So it’s rich with meaning, but such a mouthful. Their daughter is Lola Iolani – positively tame by comparison!
  • TeamSugar asked Are Four-Named Babies the Newest Trend? Most commenters agreed that there are plenty of valid reasons to choose two middles, but the voters seem to favor sticking with just one.
  • Earlier this week, Babycenter released their Top 100 names of the year, based on searches at their site. Emma and Aiden took the top spots!
  • Paris Hilton intends to name her firstborn London. Someday.
  • Just for fun, Paige’s Page has a list of names from the world of Barbie.

Lastly, if you have any ideas for boys’ Names of the Day, please leave a comment or drop me a line at appmtn (at) gmail (dot) com. Girls’ names are welcome, too, but I’m short of boys’ suggestions at the moment.

  1. Barnaby is 3/20, Lola! I’ve been thinking about Barney a lot, so he’s a great fit. (Yup, my son has discovered the purple dinosaur. But then there’s *How I Met Your Mother* on tv …)

Photoquilty, Eric is my father, brother and could’ve been a future son’s name. (Except my brother called it. And I guess he has dibs.) I’ll cover Eric/Erik on 3/24.

Believe it or not, I knew a Wolfgang in college. He’s 3/28.

    Elmer – 4/19
    Jesse – 4/7
    Peter – 4/12. Yup, that’s Easter Sunday. I couldn’t resist.
    Cecil – 4/29
    Virgil – 4/17
    Glenn – 4/25
    Warren – 4/23
    Sylvester – 4/3

I’m stumped on Heathcliff/Clifford. It definitely needs to be covered, but let me think about whether it should be two posts or one. Many thanks!

  2. London as a daughter of Paris… how original! IMO, it just shows how much thought that girl/woman has…
How in the heck is Nakoa etc. etc. supposed to learn how to pronounce his name, let alone spell it? I’m all for cool names from other cultures, but this… this is too much to say the least…
I’ve never heard of a five-name chain! I’m guessing that with each generation there’s more pressure to have a son; maybe now they’re trying for the record? Though I’m sure it’s something ridiculous like 27 in a row with the same name…

    Thanks for the mention, Verity!
I’ll try to come up with some guys names now…

  3. Thanks for the Paris Hilton link. That was awful.
    Boy suggestions:
Please do Erik (my hubby), Wolfgang, Elmer, Jesse, Peter, Heathcliff/Clifford, Cecil, Virgil, Glenn, Warren, and Sylvester.

  4. “I would like to raise my kids in the UK so that they’ll have British accents.” Is she serious?! How superficial! (And I’d love to see how well the name London goes over in London.)

While we’re probably going to be just a one-middle name family, I can see the appeal of two. I like the idea of getting to pick a middle that I like plus a middle to honor a family member. (Something like Clara Juliet Elizabeth Grey, where Elizabeth comes from my mom’s middle. Choosing one middle that’s decidedly not “filler” makes me feel better about choosing one that is.) Our last name is short, and our favorite first names tend to be short, so I could see it working. We’ll have to see.

I’m emailing you two more NotD suggestions.

  5. I don’t know about anyone else but not knowing the newest Affleck’s name is making me insane! 🙂 Love those names at Clio’s center, Mabel’s darling and you know I’m wild about Clio)! Adrian makes me swoon on a boy and Ida’s a bit surprising but completely charming.

My kids all have 4 names and my OH & I did when no one else did! I think I’ll be pleased when the majority still have one, makes my kids stand out that much more.

Not surprised to hear about paris Hilton, the girl just exudes trash. Just goes to show, money can’t buy class. 😀

As for Boys names for you, I’ve been completely enamored with Barnaby lately, nickname Bex, Barnes or B. So he’s one suggestion for you. I’m sure I’ll come up with a few more, I just want to make sure you haven’t covered them yet. Check your email later!
