Out There Alphabet names A to F

Over the summer, I started throwing out this question:

Alphabet time: what are the most out-there names that you love, starting with the letter …

It was the kind of fun question that I love to share on Facebook and Twitter, and they were consistently popular, in June and July and August.

And the answers!  Oh, the names were spectacular.  They couldn’t just fade away.

Plus, other bloggers have been doing some great series on obscure names focused on the alphabet.  Lou just launched her Offbeat Alphabet series here, and Sophie has been writing about Names You Never Thought of Using for months.

So I’ve collected all of your wisdom, and, along with some of my favorite quotes from the responses.  There are so, so many names, from the perfectly wearable to the truly obscure.  A few notes:

  • Most mentioned means any name that was mentioned more than once.  I probably should have kept count, because a few of these were really, really mentioned, again and again!
  • An * means that the person mentioning the name actually used it for their child, or has a sibling, niece/nephew, etc. by the name.  Always interesting to see which unusual choices are actually being, well, chosen.
  • I’ve divided the list by names for girls and names for boys. But not all of the original comments were so clear – meaning I’ve probably put some girl names on the boy list and vice versa. If the comment did indicate gender, I’ve listed it accordingly.

Other than that, I’ve left the lists free of comments. First, because I’d love to hear your honest reactions.  (Are they really all that out-there? Are there any new favorites you’re adding to your list?)  Plus, most of my thoughts apply to the entire list – so it makes more sense to share them at the very end of the series.

My apologies for any omissions – there was a lot of cut and paste, and I’m sure I overlooked a few (great) names. Feel free to add them at the end.

And now, the post that you wrote!out there alphabet baby names a to f

  1. From the list, I have met people (adults, kids, in the US, internationally) with these names: Astrid, Araminta, Ariadne, Atalanta, Bernadette, Bronwen, Belen, Bevan, Curran, Casimir, Delphine, Darragh, Echo, Elise, Enid, Effie, Eleanor, Erin, Esther, Emerson, Elio, Ezekiel, Fiona, Florence, Francesca, Federico, & Finley. I met the Ariadne just last week and she is a toddler! I was delighted!

A name I love that is probably very uncommon in the US is Cipriana. I know one who goes by Cipri (pronounced like “SIP-ree”). It doesn’t seem “out there” to me, just unknown.

  2. Girl’s; Alpha, Aeon, Belhonor, Coty, Dalila, Dulcibella, Eve (only with middle name Starlight), Evelune, Femme/Femi…

Boy’s; Aslan, Blue, Cullum (family surname), Calm, Constantine, Dante-Valentino, Dracien, Everwin, Ender, Forest…

  3. Amyas is my no 1 name for a boy…but I’ve seen websites advise it pronounced Am- eye- us. I’m 99% sure it’s in fact, Am-ee-us…I think both ways sound nice, actually, but I’m a stickler for facts !! Not sure about middle names but I think it’s lovely, and for a girl Pandora Mary All the way!

    1. Oh and Barnaby for the B’s not listed, I’d have a little Barnaby Atticus too, And a Jemima Lily….My hypothetical 4 children lol haha! I can’t find the O section but I have a sister called Ottilie…and my real name is Georgina, which I was ambivalent about as a kid but love now. Georgia is quite popular but Georgina not. Strangely my mum initially wanted Georgia but changed her mind and is now glad of course…

  4. I love so many of these names and think many of them are definitely wearable! In fact, I think I will use this as a list to consult once we’re expecting 😉 I’m not sure if I should be offended or happy that my favorites are on here. Maybe it’s a good thing for me if a lot of people are too afraid to use them?! I was actually searching for info on one of my new crushes, Dvora. Do you think it’s wearable on an American baby today? Our heritage is Scandinavian and in all likelihood our baby will be tall and blonde, with a common last name (think Smith or Brown). Not sure if it works or not, but I love Dvora right now! 😀 Maybe it could be the NOTD someday?

    1. Dvora – interesting! It’s coming up as BNotD on January 13th. (Not as far away as it sounds, I promise!)
