Esme

A very happy Father’s Day to everyone celebrating in the US!

Was the #shareacoke campaign tailor made for name nerds?

I’ve mentioned it before, but when I was flipping through my photos from my recent trip to England and Ireland, I realized that I took a lot of pictures of personalized bottles.

But hey, Esme is a great name.  Who can resist?  More pics on the AppMtn Facebook page.

  • Lots to think about in this article by Emma Cueto on names and class, including this quote: After all, if middle class parents can name their kids after the Mother of Dragons and rich people can name their daughter North West, then nobody has any right to judge anybody anymore.  I tend to agree – but I still wonder how I’ll react the first time I meet a Khaleesi.
  • Archie, Charlie, Jack, Jack, and Jake – nickname names really are popular in the UK.  There’s also a Kitty and a Nellie on this birth announcement round-up at British Baby Names.
  • How great is Pippa Snow?  Spotted by Names for Real in this post.  And I’m not sure what to think of Belladora, from the same post, but I like spotting new smoosh names.
  • I do not tire of Bree’s posts featuring random royal families.  Especially when the post includes the name Ludovika.  Is Ludovika – or maybe Ludovica – wearable in 2014?
  • A great list of longer names for boys with ready nicknames at Swistle.
  • Speaking of longer names for boys, I love the Old School list in the lefthand column here.  Well, mostly I just enjoyed the whole graphic.  But seriously, how great is Calhoun?
  • Which reminds me, the graphic is from the recalculated Top 100 at NameNerds.  The Top Three spots go to Aiden, Jacksonand Jayden, according to their count of combined spellings.
  • Rory and Ronan are my favorites from this list of Irish Boys’ Names at Waltzing More than Matilda.
  • I don’t always agree with Jennifer Moss, but I do think that she’s right about Declayn versus Declan. I would definitely assume that the ‘ay’ spelling indicated a different pronunciation.
  • Maren, Theoline, Ottilieand many more lovelies in Baby Names from Yesteryear’s Norwegian Delights post.
  • Summer names … in French!  Is Thalassa really wearable?  I love that one …
  • I know a cute kid called Harold.  It never would have occurred to me to suggest it, but it changes when you hear it in use.  Despite the title of this BabyCentre blog post, that’s really the point – choose what you love.
  • Unless, of course, you’re in Germany, and the name you love is Danger.  Or Bones or Superman or Blixa.  But it looks like Yukon, Yoda, Euphoria, and Vegas made the cut.  Also Princess and Prinzessa.  Or am I misreading that?  Found via Clare’s fabulous Scoop.it page.

That’s all for this week.  As always, thank you for reading – and have a great week!

  1. I love Ludovica. Seems like it’s perfect for one of those ooh-la-la moments when you find out tomboy Lu is really something fancy. I like Ludovic, too — he’s the main character in one of my favorite movies, My Life in Pink.

  2. The closest hubby and I have ever got to a spontaneous mutual name love was when he confessed that he had always secretly wanted a son named Harold … I got so excited because I LOVE the name Harold. I also like Hereward.

Yes, to me Declayn would be said de-KLAYN, and I would think it would be said like D’Sean or DeAndrew or those other De+Name names.

  3. Speaking of Khaleesi, the one I know has sisters named Genevieve and Sabrina – I was taken aback when I found out they went with something so different than her sisters.
