Levi Alves McConaughey is a big brother! Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves welcomed a daughter, Vida Alves McConaughey, earlier today. (Hat tip to Celebrity Baby Blog.) Mom and baby are doing well.

And I’m intrigued. First we welcomed Bardot Vita Boreanaz. Now Vida McConaughey. Is Vida/Vita the new Ava?

  1. I hope Vida doesn’t get too popular, as it is reserved for my first daughter in honour of my grandmother. Her family was Russian. But that’s a selfish thing. I was always a little worried about the fact that it rhymes with spider.

    1. Rhymes with spider? It’s pronounced VEE-dah. Spider is SPY-der. Where are you from, and how did your gandmother pronounce it? I knew a Russian ida in HS, and she also pronounced it VEE-dah.

      1. How interesting! My Gran’s name definitely rhymed with spider 🙂 Her family was originally from Russia/Poland, but she lived in South Wales. I much prefer that pronnunication, because it’s what I’m used to. I think you have brought up another potential problem for me there, as I don’t like the idea of having to explain the pronunciation.

  2. I really like Vida despite a bad personal association. But regarding the sibset, I think Vida sounds too much like Levi to make it a truly successful choice. The V is so distinctive on its own and then they also share the long E sound…. too close for comfort, IMO.

    1. That was my first thought – Vida and Levi in one family? Too close!

But I do like that they chose her name for its meaning, and not in some attempt to be cool or whatever it is celeb’s usually use as criteria…

      1. You and Jess make a good point. Levi and Vida are on that line – Levida sounds like a prescription drug!

      2. Same here. I see them as twins in a cutesy-matchy family. I love Levi on its own, and I think I’m liking Vida, too. But together? Not so much. I have a feeling they’re going to have a lot of tongue twisters.

Maybe they didn’t notice the similarity though (it can happen, just happened to my brother and sister in law. They named their baby and then realized the name sounded quite similar to both their daughter and their dog!)

  3. I love it. It’s pretty and it goes really nicely with Levi. No catty comment fom ol’ PQ today.

    1. I’m also pretty sure Vida means life in Spanish. All in all, I think they got a good jump on starbaby excellence in naming for 2010.

  4. Vida is actually getting noticed in Norway as well ^^
It’s a nice name, but seems rather abstract to me, in a way, which is something I don’t like in names. Leah, Mia, Maya, Jenna, Jada, Lila, Mila, Tessa, Kira, Kyla and so on all feel abstract to me, like they’re incomplete or something, and I just don’t like them… It seems to be limited to girls’ names ending in -a with two syllables though, and no more than four different letters 😛
