MarchMadness2014The boys’ final match is underway, and now it is time to vote for your favorite names for girls one last time!

The winner of this match will join a rarefied sorority – the other names to have worn the title include:

  • In 2011, Louisa won the top spot.
  • Genevieve carried the day in 2012.
  • Last year, Isla was the winner.

Now it’s time to reveal the results of the semi-final round, and to vote in the final match-up!

I mentioned in the boys’ round that I would have never guessed at the names to make it through to the final round.  The same is true for girls.  Yup, if I’d been betting on the brackets, I’d have lost big time going into the finals!

Is it me, or does the first contender to earn a place in the final count as a major upset?  Cora bested Beatrix in the semi-finals, 55% to 45%.  Based on the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Beatrix over the years at Nameberry and here, I would have favored Beatrix to win the whole tourney.  But maybe I was wrong.  Cora is more popular, ranking #155 in 2012.  Score one for the Countess of Grantham – Cora advances!

The second semi-final was ever-so-close.  I couldn’t guess who would win.  And unlike my (incorrect) hunch in the first match-up, I never felt like I could guess in the Margot versus Iris match.  They’re both among my favorite names for girls!  Iris lost – but just barely, scoring 49% to Margot’s 51%.

Now the lovely, literary Cora faces off against the classic-with-a-twist Margot:

Voting will remain open until Friday, March 28th.  The winner will be announced on Saturday, March 29th!

  1. Wow, I’m surprised to see Cora taking the lead! I’m definitely in Camp Margot and think we will be seeing a lot more little Margots in the years to come. I wonder if the character named Margo (who goes by the cute nickname Go) in the über-popular book Gone Girl will give an extra boost to the name, especially since I hear the movie version is due to come out in the next year or two. I gather the movie Despicable Me and its sequel have had a hand in revitalizing its popularity.

    1. Yes I think Despicable Me must have had something to do with it – and perhaps Margot Robbie, who is starting to make a name for herself and would have been well-known to Australian readers?

  2. perfect dream final match-up. I love both names. But I chose Margot. I’ve been in love with this one for a few years now (and Marguerite close behind her, well, Corinna actually more than Cora).

Margot Philippa and Margot Temperance and Margot Tabitha are 3 of my favorite Margot combos.
