Welcome Readers of Nameberry and the Motherlode!

It was a sunny December Friday, a red-letter day thanks to my guest post at Nameberry on The Art of the Smoosh. It is always a privilege to spend time at their site, and I was thoroughly enjoying the comments.

When what to my wondering eyes should appear but a mention of Appellation Mountain on Lisa Belkin’s The Motherlode blog at NYTimes.com. I printed a copy for my mom, and wondered if it would be cheating to fold the print-out so “New York Times” and “Abby Sandel” were smooshed closer together.  (Today has a theme, I think!)

If you’re new here, welcome.  And if you’re a long-time reader, thank you!

P.S. Tune in tomorrow for another Reader Baby Name Story.

Guest Post at Nameberry

Thanks to Linda and Pam at Nameberry for hosting one of my guest posts today: Babes in TV Land. I am constantly amazed at how often I discover an obscure name like Alethea pops only after it appears on the small screen.  And if the show is a hit?  Well … then we can expect to meet many more girls named Cecelia in the next decade.

Here’s a quick look back at my previous guest posts:

My shelf full of baby names books is packed with their books, so it is really a privilege to write for them!

Thank you!

About a year into writing Appellation Mountain, I stopped checking the site’s stats.  I’d become a bit obsessed with it, wondering why I wasn’t doing better than so-and-so, or worried that I wasn’t ranking higher in search engines.

Then I stopped looking … and you kept reading, and telling your friends.  I can still see a summary of total visits on the dashboard, and I glance at it now and again, content that there are more and more people finding their way here.

Thursday evening I noticed that hits were trending upward – fast, and I mean Brangelina-surprise-adoption fast.  When I clicked through, I realized it was because tct1219 had mentioned me on The Bump’s community forum about baby names.  That ordinary day brought more traffic here than any guest post at Nameberry or celeb name announcement.

It is humbling to read complimentary reviews of your site, and I truly, truly appreciate each and every one of them, on The Bump and elsewhere.  But what I most appreciate is that you visit here, share your thoughts, and suggest your favorites to be profiled as Names of the Day.

So whether this is your first visit or you’ve been reading since 2008, I sincerely thank you for being here!  I was name-mad before blogs existed, but it so very much fun to share my obsession.

After many an inquiry and a few nudges, it’s official: Appellation Mountain is now on Facebook.  There’s zero content, but should you stumble across the page, yup, it is the real deal.

Now, on to the name news!

Did anyone catch the baby name reference in Wednesday night’s Cougar Town?  I can’t find a link to back it up, but I’m certain Jules told her therapist she’d already picked out a name for the baby she and relatively new boyfriend Grayson are (hypothetically, theoretically) going to adopt: Arthur.

I also had an awful name nerd moment. A newly pregnant colleague of mine asked me about the most popular baby names of the moment.  As I rattled off Ava as a solid member of the Top Ten, her jaw dropped.  Yup, she thought she’d discovered the uncommon Ava.  I hate doing that to people, but then, I’d also hate to find out that my rare gem was shared by three other babies in the maternity ward, so I’m hoping she forgives me.

Just one starbaby note this week:

If you have a Baby Name of the Day request pending, my apologies for taking longer than usual (and I’m usually not quick to begin with) to respond.  Because I rely on a good ol’ fashioned dayplanner to schedule posts, I usually try not to go more than two months in advance.  But I’ve almost filled up December 2010, and I’m debating how to manage the growth in name suggestions.

Well, that, and I have yet to buy a 2011 dayplanner, so I can’t go into January even if I want to.

As always, I’m grateful for each and every idea submitted.  I would’ve stopped writing after three weeks if I had to keep thinking up names on my own.

Have a great week!

Announcing the Winner

Thanks for all of the comments on my celebratory Give-Away. I could fill up another year writing about all of the great ideas!  (Seriously, you rock!  It took everything I had not to comment back and add them to the calendar immediately.)

But for the moment, let me announce the winner who gets to fill up a week.  As selected by the random number generator at Random.Org, the winner is commenter #18: Liz, who suggested Leonie or Lark.  Liz, I’ll be in touch via email so we can talk about your five picks!

If you’re having trouble figuring out how Liz was #18, this was my method:  I wrote down everyone’s name in the order they made their first comment, ignoring the friendly chatter that resulted in additional posts.  Once I had a list of the true entries – 42 very creative ones in all! – I used the Random Number generator to pick a winner.

This was so much fun, we might have to do it again!

A Give-Away

UPDATE:  Thanks for all of the comments – I could fill up another year writing about all of the great ideas!  But for the moment, let me announce the winner who gets to fill up a week.  As selected by the random number generator at Random.Org, the winner is commenter #18: Liz, who suggested Leonie or Lark. I’ve been thinking of how to celebrate my 1,000th post.  Have you all over for brunch?  Wouldn’t work – I don’t have that many forks.

But then I remembered back in the day, when MTV would be “taken over” by Duran Duran or Britney Spears for a few hours.  The pop star in charge would choose the playlist, which would look something like the regular rotation anyhow, but would always have a few surprises.  I was a tweenaged MTV junkie, so I remember eagerly anticipating some of those mini-thons.  I always thought about what I’d play, because hey, who doesn’t want to be in charge?

Now’s your chance to take something  over, and that would be the Baby Names of the Day list for the week of December 27 – the last week of the year.  You can choose five names, any five names, from classics like Elizabeth and William, to the wackiest appellations under the sun.  Want me to write about Nevaeh?  I’ll do it – if you win!

Enter by leaving a comment here with one of the names that you might choose.  I won’t hold you to it!  The winner will be chosen by random drawing using the widget at random.org and announced next Saturday, 9/18.

If it is your first comment, your comment won’t appear immediately.  But I’d be delighted to hear from you, too.  :)

3 Things I’ve Learned About Names in 1,000 Posts

Drumroll, please … this is post #1,000, written over more than two and a half years.

More than 700 of those posts are deep dives into one particular featured Name of the Day.  Here’s a quick look at what I’ve learned over the past two-going-on-three years.

Rerun Week: Day Three

I can’t think why I’m so curious about Vincent.  Maybe because you’ll notice in the comments that I left a few notable bearers of the name out in the original version.  (That mistake has been corrected, though doubtless I’ve still overlooked a few!)

Maybe it is because I know a Vincent and we recently discussed his unwillingness to answer to Vincenzo.  (Apparently, I wasn’t the first to suggest it.)  It’s also a family name in my very Italian family, but somehow, it isn’t one we’ve ever considered using.

In any event, he’s been updated and rebooted and here he is: Vincent, the 2010 edition.

Announcing Rerun Week

Back in May 2008, I didn’t give any thought to how I’d manage things down the road.  You know, when I’d written nearly one thousand posts.  And had tons of readers and comments, for which I’m truly grateful.

It did cross my mind that the stats I cited in May 2008 were 2006 numbers – and that they’d eventually be outdated.  And, of course, that new trends would emerge, trends I couldn’t quite wrap my head around in 2008.

There’s also the fact that I wanted to go to the beach this summer!

So this week I’m not posting new Baby Names of the Day.  But I have rebooted five of my earlier posts, each of which definitely needed some polishing and revising.  I’ll post a link to one of those each day.
