She’s been quietly rising since 2002.  What’s behind this intriguing appellation?

Thanks to Samantha for suggesting her mother’s name, Danna, as our Baby Name of the Day.

If Sadie is stylish, is it any wonder this name is making a comeback?

Thanks to Photoquilty for suggesting Elsie as Baby Name of the Day.

Sunday Summary: 11/28/10

Things for which I am grateful: name blogger Xanthe Linnea is back with the story of her son’s name, Leo Nathaniel.  And Emmy Jo shared Julius Arthur‘s name story, complete with absolutely adorable photos!  They make for great reading.  Plus, be on the lookout for another Reader Baby Name Story here next Saturday!

Another thing that fills me with joy: your boundless creativity, as seen in the Holiday Baby Name Game: Thanksgiving Edition.  The suggestions were fabulous – I’ve winnowed it down to a few choices for the polls.  Vote for your favorites below!

I’ve been putting more and more Real Life name spottings over at Facebook, but here are a few I couldn’t resist:

  • Brothers named Cole and Kahle;
  • Brothers Brandon, Bryan, and Bryce;
  • Also an Emett – not a typo.

The first two sets run afoul of my How Close is too Close? tests.  And while I’ve defended alternate spellings, Emett makes me want to backspace.  I wonder if there’s a reason?

Elsewhere online:

The big Hollywood news was the birth of Benjamin Travolta.  But with Pink among the currently expecting celebs, we can only expect a bumper crop of fabulous baby names in 2011.

Hope you had a great week, and for those in the US, a fun Thanksgiving.

Thanks for reading, and see you next week!

Holiday Baby Name Game: Thanksgiving Edition

A Turkey.

There’s no Baby Name of the Day post today, and normally I’d just link up to a bunch of the best holiday-inspired baby name posts in Sunday’s Summary.

But then I spotted Nameberry’s cool Thanksgiving Baby Names post, complete with slideshow.

And I remembered this post, from last year’s holiday.

So I’m asking: if you had to name a baby today, and you absolutely had to incorporate the holiday your child’s name, what would you choose?

Feel free to play along even if you’re not in the US … actually, you’ll probably have more free time.

I’ll choose a handful and run a poll in the Sunday Summary so we can vote for our favorite.  Winner gets bragging rights!

So bring ‘em on: girl or boy, what would you name a Thanksgiving-born child?  MercyMyles?  Tom?  I can’t wait to read the comments!

NOTE:  I’ve closed comments, since the polls are already up in this week’s Sunday Summary.  Feel free to leave another idea there – and vote!

Starbaby News: Welcome Benjamin!

This name isn’t a surprise – it was announced a few weeks ago – but I wanted to share the news that John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s son Benjamin has arrived!

It is interesting to see how their naming style has changed over the years.  Their firstborn was apparently named after John’s love of aviation, hence Jett.  And daughter Ella Bleu has a name that’s somewhere between traditional and daring.  Both names were ahead of the curve and inspired other parents.  But Benjamin ranked #20 in 2009 – his most popular ever.  No word yet on their name choice – I’ll be curious to hear if they comment on their inspiration.

Congratulations to the family.

Baby Name of the Day: Indigo

David Bowie met a girl called Blue Jean back in 1984, but you’re more likely to meet a child wearing this colorful appellation.

Thanks to Photoquilty for suggesting Indigo as Baby Name of the Day.

Sunday Summary: 11/21/10

Congratulations to Kate of My Kids Eat Off the Floor on the birth of Juno Kate!  The amazing Kate has already sent in Juno’s name story, so look for it soon.

So I’ve been doing more lurking, this time at Babyzone:

  • Aven suggested for a boy, like Gavin without the G;
  • McKelyn for a girl, but is that Makayla with an “n” or more like McHelen?
  • Arayu for a girl, pronounced ah ray you to honor a grandpa Ray – only she’s not sure she’ll use it because “people tell me it sounds foreign.”  You don’t say;
  • Niveah, blurring the boundary between Heaven-spelled-backwards and the skin care aisle at Rite Aid.

And Babynamelover spotted a girl called Tuezdey.  Shiver!  I often wonder if the names I like are truly in the minority, or if there’s some dynamic at work on discussion boards.  Do you only visit if your tastes run to the extreme, be it Cloelia or Haedyn?  Or do you mostly lurk if you fall somewhere in between?

Names that caught my eye that I quite like this week:

In celeb news:

With the end of the year just weeks away – really! – Baby Name Wizard is taking nominations for the Name of the Year. Snooki is getting some early attention, so go vote for her – or shout her down!

And having just made a Jersey Shore reference, I think I’d really better go do something productive.  Maybe I’ll read some improving literature and try to pay attention to something other than the characters’ names.

Thanks, as always, for reading, and have a great week – and, if you’re in the U.S., a Happy Thanksgiving!  There’s no post planned for Thursday, but I’ll be back on Friday.
