Calling All Lurkers

If you’re a regular here, you’ll know that the best way to request a Baby Name of the Day is to email appmtn (at) gmail (dot) com.

But if you’re not quite that bold, here’s your chance: if you’ve never, ever, ever requested a NotD here, go ahead and leave a suggestion in the comments.  I’ve blocked a week in July for requests from readers who have never asked before.

You can suggest as many as you like, but I’ll take just one per lurker.  I can’t wait to read what you think up!

  1. My request is: Irene. It was my grandmother’s name and I think it’s ready for a comeback. It means “peace” in Greek. :)

  2. Ooh, I’m the first! Long time lurker here. Would you do a post for the name Gray? Maybe you could list any and all names that could be shortened to Gray for a boy (I have a running list of these, but wondering if I’m missing anything)? <3 your site! Thanks!

    Leah

    • You know that I love Gray and don’t want anyone else to know about it! Oh well, would love to see it as NotD. I love Gray as a nn for Grady, which has been in my family for four generations that I know of. Just brainstorming here…it would also work for Graham, Graeme, Grace, Grainger, Grail/Grael, Graydon or Grayson.

  3. I’d like to suggest Winslow. I don’t think you have discussed this name before and it has a great namesake, Winslow Homer.

  4. i’ve commented here, but never suggested a name, so i dont know if i qualify. but i’ll suggest Esmeray. It’s a Turkish girl name that i discovered recently. I dont know anything about it, but i think it’s pronounced es-mur-eye

  5. Siofra! Or Morag! Or Pallas, Saoirse, Romola, Brighid, Rhiannon, Pippa, Rhea, Espen, Mungo, Tullius or Niall! (I’ve got a long list of favorite names.)

    • What a great list, Maja! Which one to pick?

I think it has to be Rhiannon, though they all intrigue me. But we’ll put Rhiannon on for July 15!

  6. Hi :-) I love you blog! have been interested in names since I was 13yrs old… have you ever featured the name “Valentina” ? :-)

  7. I am obsessed with your site! I feel so much better knowing that there are other name-nerds out there… My mother used to look at me awfully funny when I was a kid and the books I came home from the library with were baby name books, lol.

As for the NotD, how about Tracy? I know, I know, it’s straight outta the early eighties… but it’s my name, and so am I, so why not? :)

    • Thanks, Saucy! And I know EXACTLY what you mean. I read my mother’s only name your baby book until the covers fell off and pages dropped out.

Tracy will be featured on July 22!

  8. I have a few…
Girls: Clover, Vashti, Aphra, Hebe, Hero, Thisbe, Delphi
Boys: Django, Wilfred, Diggory, Rudy, Fitzwilliam, Maxim
    Thank you!

  9. We are expecting our second child in the fall and will name the baby Sloane if she is a girl. Would love the see Sloane be the name of the day! Thanks!

  10. You know, on second thought, there is a name that I’ve never been able to find out much about… My boss’ name, Munevera, pronounced mon-EV-ra.

She’s Croatian, and I think the name is beautiful… She goes by the nickname Moni, and I just think it’s exotic and lovely.

  11. I’d like to suggest my name – Bella. I actually chose this name for myself about 10 years ago, before it became really popular! I’d like to know some of the history behind it.

  12. Hi I am a long time lurker, I have never commented or suggested a name before.

I am having my first baby in October and the names we like are Felix for a boy or Greta for a girl. It would be nice to learn a bit more about the names in name of the day.

    Thanks!

  13. I have no idea if any of these have ever been featured, but how about…

    Idony
    Nolwenn
    Xenia
    Agnes
    Zéphyrine
    Thyra
    Violante

  14. For girls, I’ve love to see Delaney, Geneva or Petra featured as a NotD.

& For boys, I second Rita’s request for Joachim.

  15. I would love to see a post about the name Edmund, it’s my favorite name and I have been lurking hoping it would come up for about a year now. I also second Cecily’s suggestion of Antonia, another one of my favorites.

  16. I’ve been lurking for a few months and have a few name of the day suggestions:

girls – Kilmeny, Kerensa, Deanne, Valancy
    boys – Victor, Machaon

  17. Female: Devi, Katell, Arista, Cambria, Cherie, Tansy, Djuna
    Either: Bellamy, Bennett

  18. Love to hear your thoughts on my daughter’s name: Willa. I hear it everywhere now, but it still hasn’t cracked the SSA’s top 1000 names for girls since the first half of the 20th century.
